Stuart444
Hi, I'm new to Affinity and indeed new to Macs. I have great expectations of it because a much more experienced photographer friend finds it very good, and I was quite frustrated by Windows photo finishing software. However I've been reading of limited printing options on this forum, which is worrying. My problem currently is I want to print using my Canon MG5450 printer, and in PSE when the print dialogue comes up I can select the paper type, quality , size etc. In Affinity I can't seem to alter anything and the only paper listed under Quality and Media is Media type - plain paper, and Quality - standard, although another dialogue offers "Fast printing" or "Fine printing", but both on plain paper. That is the case for all Profiles. The printer is listed as "Canon 5400 series" and the driver as 13.7.1.0 Does setting up the printer have to be done using ICC profiles? I don't have one for this printer and my usual Fotospeed paper, but I'd look for one if this is the answer. Or how else? Thanks Stuart
Staff Leigh Posted November 19, 2015 Staff Share Posted November 19, 2015 Welcome to the forums Stuart Ord :) If you open TextEdit and go to File > Print... do you get the same options as Affinity Photo?
Stuart444
Hi Leigh, Thanks for your answer. Alas I don't understand. I only use Affinity Photo, and there's no TextEdit menu item I can see. If I do File>Print I get only the options I described above. Staff MEB Posted November 20, 2015 Staff Share Posted November 20, 2015 Hi Stuart Ord, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) Leigh was referring to the TextEdit app (a different app that comes with OS X). Does the Print dialog offer the same options is both Affinity Photo and TextEdit? You can find Text Edit in the Launchpad inside the "Other" folder. Stuart444
Hi MEB, Thanks! I'm glad you noticed my novice status on Macs! I see now, I hadn't delved into that part of the OS before. When I do that in TextEdit, I get exactly the same Print dialogue as I get in Affinity Photo.
Stuart444
Problem solved thanks to Canon's help phone line. In case other Mac beginners find a similar problem, let me confess, it seems the problem was operator error. It was giving me the "problem" with all apps that could print, so it clearly was a system rather than an Affinity problem. We deleted the printer (again), reset the printing system (again), re-downloded and re-installed the driver (again), (I had been using the correct one), rebooted several times, swapped USB ports, swapped USB cable.... and suddenly it worked. I think now either I'd missed the button at the bottom of the print screen "Show details", or more likely I'd tried it and hadn't spotted the procedure on the next screen. On the next screen, click the button "Affinity Photo" and there revealed are options on Layout, Colour Matching, Quality and Media, and others. Photo papers are selected in Quality and Media. It works! Perhaps Serif might consider a better explanation of using the print dialoges in Help? Leigh
Staff Leigh Posted November 25, 2015 Staff Share Posted November 25, 2015 Glad to hear that you've sorted it :) The help does state that the standard Apple printing options are available from the Show Details dialog.
