Main Posted September 16, 2021 Posted September 16, 2021 While trying to learn more about using Affinity Photo, I clicked on the "toggle user interface button; and my desktop turned to a blank black screen. I don't know how to get out of that mode. Quote

I hope this helps! Quote
Main Posted September 16, 2021 Author Posted September 16, 2021 Dan C, Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, my problem is that there is no option to toggle user interface again. All I have is a blank, unresponsive screen. Quote
Old Bruce Posted September 16, 2021 Posted September 16, 2021 Are you on Mac or Windows? What OS and also in which of the three Affinity apps is this happening? 38 minutes ago, Main said: I clicked on the "toggle user interface button;.... Do you mean the Menu Item? If yes then click it again. If you mean an actual button then I am lost because I have never seen one. 11 minutes ago, Main said: Unfortunately, my problem is that there is no option to toggle user interface again. All I have is a blank, unresponsive screen. I am using Mac and one thing that people do is run their applications in full screen mode, another thing on Mac is the ability to automatically show/hide the menu bar. This sounds like that may have happened. Move your cursor to the top of the screen and you should be able to see the menu bar. Unless of course you are running multiple monitors . Main Posted September 16, 2021 Author Posted September 16, 2021 I am on a Mac. I opened Affinity Designer to see if I could find how I acquired this problem. Designer has a "toggle UI" option at the bottom of the view menu which looks like a right-arrow or tab key followed by what looks like and "I"; but I am afraid to also lock up Designer. I can't find any help on the issue. Quote
Main Posted September 16, 2021 Author Posted September 16, 2021 The problem is on Affinity Photo; but the option to toggle UI is also available on Affinity Designer. I don't want to mess with that! I am using a 2020 iMac Retina 5K, 27 inch and running macOS Big Sur. Quote

Main Posted September 16, 2021 Author Posted September 16, 2021 I called it a button. Actually it is a menu choice on the "view" menu. It is the last item at the bottom of the menu. I am not sure if I am using this forum correctly; so I may not be responding as expected. Quote
Staff MEB Posted September 16, 2021 Staff Posted September 16, 2021 Hi @Main, Just press the TAB key on your keyboard to unhide the UI again - it does the same thing as that menu command. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software

Main Posted September 16, 2021 Author Posted September 16, 2021 Thanks for the help everyone. I did get the program to come back by pressing tab. It only has the menu bar on top now though. I will have to figure out how to get the rest of the screen to populate. Hopefully the problem is solved. Quote
Staff MEB Posted September 16, 2021 Staff Posted September 16, 2021 Go to to menu View and make sure Show Toolbar and Show Context Toolbar are both ticked. These are the main and second toolbars from the top. If the side panels are not visible you can enable them in View> Studio> Show Left Studio and Show Right Studio or just reset the whole thing on the bottom of the View > Studio menu. View > Show Tool controls the visibility of the toolbar on the left (where all tools are located). Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software

View > Studio > Reset Studio. File > New... or File > Open... will get you a document/file to work with too. Main Posted September 16, 2021 Author Posted September 16, 2021 My mind is frazzled right now because of a deadline. I am not very familiar with this forum; so I may have missed some posts. The interface is a bit confusing to me. My thanks to Old Bruce, MEB, and anyone else who has tried to help me. I finally did get Photo to work properly again. It was a bit tricky, probably due to my own lack of knowledge. I think that I have a fully working version now. Cheers!, and have a wonderful day. Old Bruce, MEB and Dan C 3 Quote

You just need to familiarize yourself with the many options to show & hide various elements of the user interface. A good place to start is the Customizing the Workspace help topic. You can also customize the Tools panel & the main Toolbar. You can even save different Studio presets via the View menu > Studio Presets > Add Preset option & switch among them so you can have different layouts customized to suit different workflows. It can be a bit overwhelming at first but it should not take you too long to become comfortable setting everything up in the way(s) you most prefer. Probably, but consider how many of the numerous customization options have been implemented because users asked for them, or for something similar.
