Continuous export of slices

Recommended Posts

I have just started using the Export Persona, but can not get the Continuous to work.  I am on a Mac, with version 1.10.1

If I go through File / Export, export works fine, always has.  And if I use the Export Persona to set up slices, and choose Export Slices to a new location, it works.  However if I want to export into a previously used folder, I get a message:  The following files will either be overwritten or cannot be exported."  It will list all of my selected slices.  My three options are Cancel, which obviously cancels; Export, which will then overwrite all of the previous files; and Export only new items, which does nothing.   Because of this, I am suspicious that for some reason it's not triggering as new content.  Any help or suggestions?

I might add that I tried the Continuous with a file I was working on, then after reading some of the issues, started with a much simpler file, created new files, changed location to be exported (all on my Mac Hard drive) but get the same result whether I am working with text or shapes, changing color, sizes, fonts, etc.  Result is the same in each case.

The only time I use Continuous Export is when I have slices made from Layers (usually an artboard or a group which I have named). When I change the content of a Layer and save the document the Continuous Export occurs without prompting and in the background.

Make a document with one short and wide rectangle on it. Name the rectangle For Continuous  Export and set up the Export persona to export that layer as a PNG (or what ever you want) and check the Continuous Export box.

Change the colour of the rectangle and save the file, the exported PNG should have its colour changed, change it to a square and save the document, the PNG should now be a square, make it tall and thin and save....

We don't get different new files each time the document is saved.

Is the Continuous check box ticked (from your first screenshot) when you select the Slice named Continuous? We have to be explicit.

Sorry, I wasn't explicit in my explanation and I didn't download your file.

I missed an important step. You have to make the Layer the slice. Your document has an area called Continuous. You go to the Layers Panel in the Export persona and use that to make a slice (there is a button at the bottom of the layers panel) then you can set it to be exported continuously.

Sorry about the confusion frustration I have caused.

here is a document.

So..... I tried Continuous Export with Affinity Photo and it worked fine.  I saved the file and then opened it with Designer, and then it continuously exported.  So I tried starting a file in AP, then creating and exporting slices in AD, but same as before.  Went back to AP to verify, and now I can't continuously export from AP.  The export settings are all the same.  I have tried saving in different locations on my hard drive but that hasn't made any difference.  I can't figure out why Photo worked at first, then quit.  But assuming it's the same thing as with Designer.

Just so we are on the same page here.

If you use the Export Persona to export the slice yourself you will see the warning about overwriting, you will see the warning if you use File > Export...

If you want the exported file to show the changes you make in your Photo or Designer document use the Continuous Export function.

Continuous Export from the Export persona will export and overwrite the file each time you save the Designer or Photo Document. There is no need to go to the Export persona again.

Are you wanting to automatically update the exerted PNG as you continue to fine tune the colours, shapes, fonts etc in your Designer or Photo document? If yes then the export persona's continues export should work.

Caveat: Do not save or export to Networked or Cloud storage locations. There are problems with that.

Several things - I did finally get it working.  Yes, I am wanting changes to show up in a JPG format within a folder.  I'm working on a project that is being proofed, and changes made, and I keep exporting each time I change so that it's available to the other person.  And yes, it is on iCloud, so that could be the issue.  The two things I did (and not sure if if was one, the other, or both that fixed it) but I saved the AD file in the same folder as the export folder.  I also went in and Unticked Continuous, then resticked it.  Weird but it's now working.  THANK YOU SO MUCH for your responses on this!!!

You know that reminds me that I too have probably seen that behaviour, probably a bug. I shall have to pay attention to it and see if I can come up with a recipe for repeating it.
