Modify Vector Clipping Mask without touching it's contents

Recommended Posts

Click on the mask's icon in the layers panel. That should select only that layer. Now use the move tool to get the bounding box and use the tool to enlarge or shrink only the mask area.

Affinity Designer 2.4.0 | Affinity Photo 2.4.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Thanks. Tried that. It does scale the content, an image in this case.

Can we see a screen shot of the layers panel? Name the appropriate layers The Mask and The Content. Double click on the name in the layers panel to rename them.

EDIT: GarryP has much better advice.

While using the Move Tool, with your clipping mask selected, check Lock Children in the Context Toolbar – see attached image.
If you cannot see the Context Toolbar then use menu “View → Show Context Toolbar”.

It's still not working. Such a basic thing. Sorry, it's frustrating, coming from 20 Years+ Illustrator experience.

Did you have the problem layer selected when you unchecked that box?

Okay, finally go it. The checkbox was checked from the beginning and it still scaled the content. I had to un- and re-check it. Jeez.

You should be able to use a key-modifier to switch to a sub-selection tool and just select whatever object you want. This workflow is unbelievably cumbersome.

Thanks a bunch for all the help! And sorry for venting.

You’re welcome. (Someone had to tell me about it when I started using the software as it wasn’t obvious to me.)
I’m slightly surprised to hear that the content was scaled when Lock Children was checked; I’ve never seen that functionality not work the way it should.
It might be worth keeping an eye on it, and if it happens again then it might be worth adding a bug report (I imagine it might be difficult to consistently replicate though).

Note: I don’t know what a “sub-selection tool” is so I can’t advise further on that. Maybe you could start a new thread giving details of what you want to do and you might get some good answers.

This kind of explains what I mean.

Are you sure you had the correct parent object selected when you checked if "Lock Children" was enabled?
