Why is a jpg image opening as a pixel layer?

I have a scan which is saved as a jpg, but when I open it in Photo it opens as a pixel layer. I want to separate it from the background using erase white paper or similar, but it seems I can't do these things with a pixel layer. How can I get where I want to go with this?

Is the JPEG layer an image layer or a pixel layer when you open the file in Affinity Photo? If it is an image layer you will need to rasterize it first. I do that by duplicating the image layer and rasterizing that duplicate layer.

Make sure your document has a Transparent background or else you may not see any difference when you use Erase White Paper

When you open a simple image like jpeg it opens as a simple pixel layer – what else it would be? And pixel layer is what all operations work on (image layer is more limited in a way).

Make sure Document > Transparent Background is selected if you want transparent image.
