How do you integrate PART of a vector design into a square/rectangle vector shape?

Recommended Posts

I'm very new to this, but I'm trying to learn. I watched most of the videos on the Affinity design and didn't see anything that really described what I needed.

Say I'm creating a business card. Last night, I learned how to integrate a part of a vector shape I created in Affinity (cloud shape) into another vector shape (a rectangle) by selecting both shapes, hitting Divide, and deleting the rest of the shape that was outside of the rectangle (which was created into an additional layer when I pressed Divide).

The problem comes when I try to do this by putting a more complex imported vector design into the rectangle. I tried my method in the previous paragraph, and simply dividing messed up the vector design I imported completely, not to mention put it in like 30 layers and didn't seem to have a seamless cut off point with the rectangle anyway.

If I could get any insight into how to get just the portion of the vector design into the rectangle and remove the rest, it would be amazing. My wife says she has done this in Illustrator before, but she has no idea how to do it in Designer since she's never used it.

Try this, the history is saved with the file so you can play back the steps

I think both of these work! The clipping/masking thing seems to work even faster, but it's great to know multiple ways. @David in Яuislip, your method worked fine to get the shape I needed, but it seems like I had to remake the rectangle? Which isn't a massive deal, but I couldn't find a way around that.

Thank you both!
