Editing shortcuts is not a good UX

Recommended Posts

This is a brain dump of a few things that annoyed me in short succession while I was editing shortcuts in Affinity Photo on macOS. None of these are a big issue in their own, but in combination they led to a bad experience for me:

  • It all started with the strange shortcut for Edit > Fill…; Shift-F5 is a really strange shortcut on macOS (Command not used as modifier, F-keys are mostly overloaded on macOS). (this is the only item that's specific to Photo).
  • No search for shortcuts in the preferences pane.
  • Window cannot be made taller, even though the list of shortcuts is really long.
  • Assigning a shortcut leads to warning triangle with tooltip "Repeat" without any indication of what other command has the same shortcut.

That's it. Thanks for your consideration!

I recommend investing 15 minutes and going through every shortcut in Preferences. I deleted the shortcut for every command I don't use regularly. Some of the text shortcuts were annoying, I'd hit them and inadvertently modify kerning or something like that and not know what keys I'd pressed. I eliminated about three quarters of the shortcuts and now have my own custom slate. It was worth the effort.
