ericosmosNEW
I’m doing comic colouring and the new version seems to butcher layers that I’m working on. When I select a certain area to paint or erase on, at a certain point, Affinity randomly deletes big chunks (rectangles in various sizes) on that layer. When I try to undo that damage in the history section, the problem gets even worse, because as I’m clicking backwards in the history section, more and more rectangle cutouts happen. No way to reverse the damage. In this this clip I tried to capture it. In this case I was colouring linework. Around the 43 second mark it happens. In the 2nd videoclip I go back in the history and make it even worse. As of now I don’t dare to touch the program any longer, since work of weeks has already been butchered by it. I’m working on an iPad Pro 12,9. IMG_1167.MP4 IMG_1168.MOV
Paul Mudditt
1. Are you up to date on iPadOS, which version are you using ? 2. Which exact iPad Pro model, 2015/16, 2017, 2018,2020,2021 ? 3. Very important, make sure you have saved all your projects in an external iCloud folder. 4. Try closing all open apps, waiting a few seconds then do a Forced Restart. If you have a home button, press and hold both the home button and the power button continuously until you see the Apple logo. If you do not have a home button, it is Volume up then volume down then press and hold the power button continuously until you see the Apple logo. 5. So long as you have done steps 3 & 4, have you tried deleting the app and re-installing ? This certainly made a difference on my 2016 iPad Pro 9.7”. ericosmosNEW
I have a 3rd Generation iPad Pro 12,9. For more device data see pic. Latest iOS version. What kind of problems did you have before you reinstalled the app?

What kind of problems did you have before you reinstalled the app? My problem was the app was crashing on startup, hence the nuclear option of a re-install. I am however using iPadOS15 Beta which I suspect was part of my problem. Quote My dad always told me, a bad workman always blames their tools…. Just waiting for Ronny Pickering….. Staff Gabe Posted August 25, 2021 Staff Share Posted August 25, 2021 Hi @ericosmosNEW, Sorry for the delayed reply. Is this a new document? Or an one that you've been working on. I think I've seen this once before but could never replicate it.
ericosmosNEW
I only work on files that I created before the update. This layer butchering effect happens in several of my files. Usually around 20+ layers incl. partially masked adjustment layers. I think it happens when I paint/erase with a soft or more complicated brush within a selected area or with alpha lock on. The files are simply to complicated to recreate them in a new file. And frankly, there are already enough bugs and quirks in Photo that I endure but cost me a lot of time to workaround or fix. But THIS bug literally destroys whole layers without the ability to undo.
Staff Gabe Posted August 26, 2021 Staff Share Posted August 26, 2021 Any chance you can attach a broken file on this link? https://www.dropbox.com/request/tF0PaIgLPtS2Z9sxxFw9

Aric
I have the same problem , It happens in both new and older saved photos. The last two times I was using the dodge and burn tools and I erased and reapplied the tool and then I get the blank blocks that can’t be reversed. They don’t appear in the history nor are they any layer themselves. 12.9 iPad Pro 2021 ios 15 beta
ericosmosNEW
Exactly! Very problematic.
ericosmosNEW
So, it happened again in a new file I'm working on. About 20 layers, different blending modes, transparencies etc. in order to better show the error occuring I set the layer on solo mode. And the error didn't occur, whereas it happened all the time with all layers visible. So, it might have something to do with how Affinity Photo handles live display while working within a complex file (though I wouldn't say it is very complex at all compared to other potential applications I would like to use the program for...). Just another hint maybe for the developers. As of now, it is almost impossible for me to finish a job inside of Photo. It always messes things up in the end. Bobby Beetle
I also have had the dreaded block appear whilst working that can’t be undone. The only way to get rid is to paint over it. It has happened while drawing a picture, and when erasing a background in a photo. Fortunately for me my work isn’t as detailed as the op, but it’s still damn annoying. Edited September 5, 2021 by Bobby Beetle
ericosmosNEW
The only way around it for me is to work on a new layer, so if something gets destroyed it will only be on the new layer. If everything goes well I merge with the layer below. not a permanent solution, but keeps me from throwing the hole thing in the trash. Needs to be fixed! Bobby Beetle
Yes it happened to me again the other night. Fortunately it was on a large fill area, and so was easy to rectify.

It has become unbearable. Did you paintbrush with a certain blending mode active? Like "Hard Light" or so? I feel like painting with a fading brush on a layer with a blending mode active and then also within a selected area triggers this behaviour more than anything else.
