Hello @drxian and welcome to the forums.

I suspect you accidentally pressed the CTRL key instead of the SHIFT key when entering text.

In addition to the advice above, if you want to add text to a text frame, make sure you have double-clicked the text frame so that you are editing the text in the frame. The same sort of thing goes for Artistic Text too.
In other words, if you are not in ‘text editing mode’ you cannot enter/edit text.

Are you sure the problem is not with you accidentally pressing the wrong keys? (I know I do it all the time!) 😁

You need to click and drag to create a text box that you can then type into

Like @carl123 explained, there is no text frame layer until you drag one out with the Frame Text Tool. The tool creates the frame layer at whatever size you drag it out to, in a similar way to how you must drag out a rectangle, ellipse, or other shape tool to create one of those layer types. Just clicking on the canvas, artboard, or page does not create anything.

It's also worth pointing out that there are two types of text tools and you might be thinking of the other one. The A tool is Artistic Text, known in some programs as text blocks or frameless text. Just select this tool, click anywhere on a blank spot on the page where there isn't already any text, and start typing. There will be no right edge to what you type, it will keep going without wrapping until you press return. Artistic text is useful for short snippets, and um, artistic text.

The T tool is for Frame Text. You can't just click and start typing, you have to either 1: click and drag to draw a text frame - the insertion point (cursor) will appear in the new frame automatically. Or 2: click in an existing frame to place the insertion point in it. Framed text has a right margin so it wraps automatically.

The problem you experienced is you picked the Frame Text tool and then clicked on a blank spot which does nothing, you have to click and drag. Since then didn't have the insertion point in a text frame or in an artistic text object and then started typing, some of those keystrokes were interpreted as keyboard shortcuts.
