Affinity Photo works very slow and unaccurate after update

Recommended Posts

Your assumption that "OpenCL shoud be working" on my system simply "because it working on yours" is incorrect.

My graphics card is "configured correctly" for my system - the reason OpenCL is not working is because affinity reports "Your version of Windows 10 is not supported" since the update.

That being said (completely on topic) - how can "turning off" OpenCL be a solution at all whenI clearly stated "It's not actually enabled"?

Also How am I off topic? The paid software literally doesn't work - that's a breach of "contract of sale". You're making assumptions about my computer yet many people are reporting the same issue.

Yes, I have read the EULA agreement - have you? Tell me what I've done that's "illegal" and how are Affinity not in breach of copyright - it literally written into the EULA that the license I bought does not indemnify them.

My graphics card is "configured correctly" for my system - the reason OpenCL is not working is because affinity reports "Your version of Windows 10 is not supported" since the update.

    No, it doesn't say that.

It says that either your Graphics card is "not modern" or your OS is not supported. Edit: So, if it says your Windows build is OK, then the problem is with the Graphics card. Either way, we need to see the actual message.

As Windows 10 and 11 are both supported for OpenCL, the issue is (edit) usually with the Graphics card or its driver. Please provide the diagnostic info that Chris B asked for, which will help determine what is wrong with the card/drivers.

You can try 1.8.5 which had no trace of OpenCL and see if that is any more stable:

Yes, 1.8.5 does work... I'm 1.10.3 at the moment - but my point is: they can't they take my money for an update and then expect me to immediately revert to an older version (which then continually nags me to update to the newest version) - and at the same time use low-level bullying tactics against people who flag the software as not working. Outrageous.

Thanks Mr. Pedantic - that's exactly what it said "Your OS is not supported." and it went on to highlight my Windows version as not supported and listed the supported versions - either way, I have Windows 10 and an Nvidia GForce 1060 which was happily running Affinity - right up until the very second I clicked update - which broke it). No coincidence that the only fix Ive found is to re-install the older version - so the finger strongly points to the update, rather than my system coincidentally becoming unstable.

Furthermore not being able to run OpenCL cannot be the problem - especially when the suggested solution is to disable OpenCL - because it wont even enable. You say "Your system should absolutely support OpenCL", but that's contrary to what the Affinity error message says - it reported that my system does not support openCL. If that's in fact incorrect - don;t shoot the messenger for yet another shortcoming of the software.

I appreciate that it's hard for devs to sift through every possible configuration but alluding that my system is rife with viruses or that I worded a system message slightly incorrectly is not helpful to me at all - especially as it's completely irrelevant (as I've said almost ad-infinitum at this point OpenCL is already disabled and I didn't use a cracked copy of Affinity).

FYI my graphics driver version is: 496.76 which is the version recommended by "Nvidia Experience" for my system

and my Windows Version is: 10.0.18363 Build 18362, patched with KB5001716.
Renderer is set to GTX - same problem occurs if I use Intel.
Thumbnails (and everything else) appear to work fine with all other software - only ever an issue with Affinity - it slows down to a freeze whenever the file browser is "called".

    Here's the Affinity error log:

[DXCore] Error 0x80004002 (308): Failed to create adapter factory!
        Installed
    Wintab: Failed to load Wintab32.dll
Wintab: Failed to create tablet context
    Exit

Looks like a similar problem people faced with Affinity Publisher.

Here's what it says on the Affinity "Purchase" page about requirements for the update...

    * Requires:

    • - Windows 10 April 2020 update (or later)
    • - Direct3D level 12.0-capable card

So I guess it's a sad day that my i7 Apache Pro Gaming Laptop is now not powerful enough to run the update of Affinity? - seeing as older versions of Windows 10 (pre 2020) and/or Nvidia 1060 graphics cards are both not supported any more?

In that case, Corel appear to have obsoleted my hardware through it's recent update.
      Right, PeaPhoto it is then.

If it says exactly that, please provide a screenshot. I think you'll find it listed two possibilities, and then provided the details for one of them, expecting you to draw the conclusion that if that one was ok the other one must be the problem.

But I'll concede that it's a confusing message.

What kind of tablet are you using? From that log the problem signs like it's related to the tablet, not graphics.

Have you tried disconnecting it to see if it works then, which could help further with diagnostics.

Thank you. I'm not sure what else to conclude from the message; seems fairly straight forward to me. Regardless of whether I was confused by the wording of the "Unsupported Machine Config" message, the fact is: I don't have OpenCL enabled so "disabling it" isn't a viable solution for me.

...I uninstalled my current version and re-install the updated version again, to get a screenshot for you...
(it was hard to take the screenshot because it kept slowing down to a crash) - but here it is....
    Affinity-Photo.jpg

and here's the info link it opened in my browser...
    https://affinity.help/photo/English.lproj/index.html?page=pages/Extras/hardwareAcceleration.html?title=Hardware acceleration.

"Affinity support for OpenCL compute acceleration requires Windows 10.0.19042 (May 2020) or later. It also requires GPU support for Direct3D 12 Feature Level 12.0, meaning the GPU must feature AMD's GCN (Graphics Core Next), NVIDIA's Maxwell, or Intel HD Graphics 510 (Skylake) or a later microarchitecture."

As for the query about which tablet I use, I don't actually use a tablet. I do own a WACOM "One" tablet which is plug-and play device - but It's not been connected to my system for over a year - certainly not since the update. I can't manually find any trace of the WACOM tablet on my system - but it's definitely possible it could be causing issues, especially if Affinity (or Window)s is erroneously detecting/reporting it as a currently connected device.

Here's a shot of my performance preferences (default)..
    Preferences.jpg

Here's the Benchmark for my GTX 1060 card using Affinity 1.10.4 on my system (obviously before it crashes) if that's helpful at all...

OK, that one shows you need an update. It says you need  .19042 or later, but you only have .18362.

Once you're updated, what does it show?

    ===

Too bad you don't have the tablet attached. In that case I'm not sure why it's complaining about wintab. Someone from Serif will probably know.

    Thanks Walt!

So you think I just need to update my Windows OS and Affinity work properly again?

I guess the tablet error log could possibly be from a long time ago and not relevant to this issue - but I'll look into it.
Appreciate your help - sorry for my hostility and frustration earlier.

I can't say that. But I can say that you can't enable Hardware Acceleration because you need a newer Windows 10.

Once you're updated to a more current Windows 10, then you can see if it's enabled automatically, or if you're able to enable it.

OK so I think I've found a possible workaround for your dev team to fix the bug in Affinity Photo 1.10.4.

If I use Affinity Photo and try to use it as normal, it will crash early on (every session - guaranteed) - especially if I use "File>Open" or "File>Import".
If however, I open Windows File Explorer first and minimise it, then open Affinity Photo. It doesn't crash at all.
If I drag-and-drop files from Desktop or Windows File Explorer onto Affinity Photo, also works fine.

In conclusion, the bug is definitely something to do with the file-browser or the way affinity caches its thumbnails- as it looks and behaves completely differently when opened natively in Windows and when "called" from inside Affinity Photo.

Hey devs..., I think @VeganPete has stumbled upon something worth exploring. His workaround also worked for me, when nothing else did. I can now engage OpenCL with my Intel UHD 620 GPU.

From one Pete to another..., thank you!

If you don't use his workaround, does it work or crash? If it crashes, that would give you a report to upload :)

(And if it doesn't crash, you probably don't need the workaround.)

"%AppData\Roaming\Affinity\Photo\1.0\CrashReports\reports\%" for me, is an empty folder, even if I show hidden files/folders. Probably because the issue (for me) is that it steadily slows down to a crawl and sometimes completely freezes my system, needing a hard-reset (which I hate doing because I don't think it's particularly healthy for the system). If I catch it in time, I can get away with opening the task manager and closing Affinity Photo from there (the close button often wont respond - especially if I open/import a file). It's often as if I'm running it on a pocket PC with very little RAM, rather than a power PC. Affinity Photo used to fly, now it just crawls.

    Hey @Chris B & @walt.farrell,

No crash reports because I don't get crashes. I get freezes (AP Not Responding) when HA is on, and not using the above workaround*.

*Update: unfortunately, after more testing, the drag-and-drop workaround is not the game changer that I was hoping for. I still get freezing, it just takes longer to initiate. I'll go back to HA off.

Same for me, doesn't fix it. Just had a few freezes since - so can confirm it's not a valid workaround.

I guess I'll just go back to a much older version to fix it.

Interesting, when I searched for an older version of Affinity, it took me to this link - someone else with the exact same unresolved issue - so I'll link it here because it's unlikely to get fixed any time soon.

For anyone facing the same issue and doesn't want to be harangued on the forum, just download an older version (as mentioned there and on the Affinity Photo "Unsupported Machine Configuration" Warning)

As Chris B says  -Affinity Photo version 1.8.5 seems to be the last version which worked with Windows v10.0.18 and GTX 1060)...

Any "haranging" was because you introduced the idea of using a "cracked" version. If you hadn't said that, the forum users would simply have told you where to download older versions of the program.

@Richard No, OpenCL is not "on by default". Please actually go back and read my comments and take a look at my screenshots instead of making the same incorrect assumptions as Walt and everyone else. If I try to manually enable HA, it says: "Your operating system is not supported". It's always been disabled on my system with Affinity Photo, even if it does default as "on" with other versions of Windows 10. SO, as I said before "try disabling it" is not a solution because it was never enabled. The only working solution for me (and many others I've seen on the forum) was to uninstall the newer versions and install an older version 1.8.5 (and then hack the registry to disable the annoying "update now" nag screen).
