The long way is to trace everything with the drawing pencil. The short way is to use VectorMagic.

How would I do this kind of art using my iPad Pro and then group the pattern to get it into the curves

Load the image and rasterise it. Switch to pixel persona and select the Smart Selection brush. Paint around the first shape, refine and output as new layer. This creates a vector copy of your selection. Repeat for each shape. Select the vector layers and tap group. Done.

If all the new layers are vector, why is the resultant file so ‘heavy’ (42 MB)? :/

I should have opened the file before asking! The new layers are raster, not vector, and they’ve been grouped and duplicated.

There are also some free animal styles in this thread

You can just add a shape (or draw one) and assign a style to it

It occurs to me that we may all have been misinterpreting your question, Josie! When you say “get it into the curves” you might simply mean you have a group of leopard-spot curves and you want them restricted to the outline of the rainbow shape; i.e. going from this

If that’s what you’re asking about, you just need to drag the group in the Layers Studio and drop it in the clipping position for the other shape.

Thanks Alfred, I see what you mean. I had thought creating the new layer from selection in Designer was producing vector but you’re right (as always 😁), on checking the file I see the layers are indeed pixel layers. Explains why refining the selection took so long! I was also surprised by file size. Makes sense now. Thinking about it now it’s no different to what I do in Photo with selections to create pixel layers. Doh… another senior moment. I fear they are becoming more frequent 😩

I'm blaming the current ‘lockdown'🤪. The chief Health Officers in each State have usurped parliament, our constitution and have taken over the country, all without a shot being fired!  I’m 2000km from my home and not allowed to return until they say I can!  Could be months. Depressing indeed.

@Josie I can see you are attempting to replicate an image you have found online - are you aware the creator is selling this design as a purchase-able SVG file?

https://www.vectorkhazana.com/occupations-design-svg/mix-designs-svg/rainbow-svg/7500

Firstly, it may be within your best interests to purchase this file, as not only would it mean you don't need to trace the image manually, you would seemingly also then have the relevant licensing to sell products using this design (from the quick glance I had at this above site).

Secondly, as this is someone else's work, we can't condone you 'copying' this for use in your own designs. This isn't the first time we've had to mention copyright to you, and you seem to be continuing to use these forums as a starting point to use work that is not your own in commercial designs.

Josie, you cannot simply trace other users designs that are for sale for your own commercial use.

This is very likely in breach of the copyright/licensing for the image you have traced. You need to purchase a copy of the SVG from the creator to have the appropriate licencing.

Please note, further threads asking to copy or use other users designs will be deleted from the forums. This is not what the Affinity Forums are for and we do not condone this behaviour with the Affinity apps. This is not your first warning for this.
