Feather edges of layers .

As a layer effect.  Or rather  ability to use  inner glow  working on alpha.

Macromedia/Adobe Fireworks had this feature and it was incredibly useful. You could not only apply it to bitmap objects and selections, but also vector shapes. It made creating soft vignettes a breeze as you simply masked an image with a shape and then set the feather on the edges of the shape. Being able to set the edge settings of aliased, anti-aliased, and feathered for each object was such a good idea - especially when working seamlessly with vectors and bitmaps in the same application. I'd love to see Affinity steal it.

All they have to do is make inner glow  work on alpha  .   like levels working on alpha only ,

Corel and many other programs have had this feature for many years. It is very useful.

Perhaps I misunderstand, but can't we already do this in Designer with the Inner Glow effect?

To be more clear…I can mask with a vector shape and apply Inner Glow from center with the Fill Opacity set to 0% and achieve a workable "feather"

It doesn't actually feather the full contour of the shape (in this case a heart) . The top middle section of the shape isn't feathered, and the amount of feathering isn't consistent in all areas of the shape contour. Ideally it would feather the shape (by the specified number of pixels and transparency/hardness) following the exact contour of the shape itself. This might be a bug, but regardless it's currently not possible unless you're simply using an oval or rect.
