4590 Posted August 2, 2021 Posted August 2, 2021 (edited) Hello, I have a 2048px square logo that I'm working on. It looks fine in a normal size but when it's shrunk down to an icon size, it gets a strange slants in the lower-left. I haven't used Affinity before so I'm not sure if this some bug or something I'm doing wrong (likely the later). Here's a screen shot. I've blocked out the top part. In the lower left corner, there's a funny slant up. At larger sizes, it looks ok but there might be a slight hint of a slope. In Affinity I've double checked all the dimension math and everything check out that I can think of. Thank you, John Edited August 2, 2021 by 4590 Quote
GarryP Posted August 2, 2021 Posted August 2, 2021 Welcome to the forums @4590 I can see a small triangle over to the left of the text (90) but since I don’t know what the whole thing is supposed to look like I cannot comment on whether it looks ‘wrong’ to me. If we can’t see what it looks like before it ‘goes wrong’ we can’t know how it has ‘gone wrong’, and therefore it’s difficult to advise. If you can’t supply the original, can you please try and explain more about what the problem is. (Annotations are sometimes useful.) Quote
4590 Posted August 2, 2021 Author Posted August 2, 2021 HI GarryP, Thanks much for the feedback. And I'm happy to hear that you see a triangle in the lower left as well - thought I was going crazy! I've attached the affinity file here.. Very strange... Thank you! logotmp.afdesign Quote
GarryP Posted August 2, 2021 Posted August 2, 2021 Thanks for sharing the document but I can’t see anything wrong. Probably because I don’t know what you expect to see. I don’t see what you mean by “a funny slant up “. All I see is some text and a triangle. The (Triangle) layer is outside the artboard; is that what you are calling the “funny slant”? (See attached image.) Otherwise, can you give an annotated image pointing to where you see something ‘wrong’ and explain a bit more about what you expected to see otherwise? Quote
4590 Posted August 2, 2021 Author Posted August 2, 2021 Hi, Please see below. The trouble area is highlighted - on the bigger image it isn't so pronounced, but on the smaller one it is. That being a funny slant up to the left corner from the bottom of the '9' What I can't figure out is why it doesn't appear square. The original file's dimensions are correct as far as I can tell so it has to be with the export I think Thanks! Quote
GarryP Posted August 2, 2021 Posted August 2, 2021 Sorry, but I’m not seeing anything wrong. What you might be seeing could be some kind of optical illusion – someone else in the forums might even know the name of it – or my eyesight may be worse than I thought. Try viewing the small exported version at a high zoom level and see if the slant is still there. Quote

Garmo Posted August 2, 2021 Posted August 2, 2021 I also think it may be an optical illusion. Is the eye trying to make the angled lines of the triangle and number nine as being parallel, thus causing the illusion? Quote

Are you looking at it at 100% magnification, when a 1px image is displayed on a 1px screen? f the image is smaller than 100%, the image data is reduced (mipmaps technique), so the display may not be correct. 4590 Posted August 2, 2021 Author Posted August 2, 2021 Check this out... same image at different zooms with the original to the right. Truly bizarre... does anyone else see it or are my eyes finally going? Quote
Staff MEB Posted August 2, 2021 Staff Posted August 2, 2021 Hi @4590, Welcome to Affinity Forums Open the png you attached above in Affinity Photo then zoom in on the icon on the left - put a guide there if needed. It's a straight line. What you are seeing is an optical illusion - i can see it too - but that's all. That or i need new glasses too. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
4590 Posted August 3, 2021 Author Posted August 3, 2021 Absolutely amazing - the one logo I design (I'm a developer) looks bad because of a bizarre optical illusion - what are the chances? Now I have to figure out to get rid of the illusion. Quote
