Feature Request: Affinity Publisher Reader

Recommended Posts

In a previous post I noted that exporting my completed 32 MB Affinity Publisher file resulted in a 320 MB PDF. That size eats up a lot of space on a tablet. What if Affinity Publisher could save files as uneditable .afpub files, and then offered an Affinity Publisher Reader for free or at little cost? That cost could be incorporated into the cost of the publication or could be free as a means to increase sales of Affinity publisher software.

If your AFPUB document is significantly smaller than the exported PDF then it’s likely that it uses linked images and, as such, the document can only be viewed properly on the machine which contains those linked images.

Similarly, any AFPUB document might use fonts and so that document can only be properly viewed on a machine which has those exact same fonts installed.

With those two things in mind, if a document uses images and fonts which are on the machine you are using, and you can’t know that the document can be viewed properly on any other machine (other than the one you are editing the document on), what would be the point of having:
1. a ‘read-only’ version of Publisher on a different machine which doesn’t have access to the images and fonts required;
2. some kind of ‘read-only’ version of Publisher installed on the same machine?

I just don’t see what use this would be.

There is the preview that's available and you don't have to open anything. On the Mac you just press spacebar while in Finder. Not sure on Windows.

Does that provide more than a look at the first page of the document?
