I have added a fill layer with colour to a pixel layer (original image) so it has a different colour background to it. Now I want to only change the highlights, shadows, brightness and colour saturation of the subject not the entire image i.e. not the background not the fill layer aswell.

is it possible ? How can I do that ?

The effect of any adjustment layer can be restricted to a particular target layer by selecting both layers in the Layers Studio and grouping them. Alternatively, drag the adjustment layer and nest it to the target layer by dragging it on top of the target and dropping it when you see a horizontal blue line.84F06551-7DC7-4B70-BABC-00125D222233.jpeg.d59f748ff9a905a1319d7bfa8b041b24.jpeg

So I drag the adjustment layer and leave it on top of the target layer and the horizontal line would automatically appear ? suggesting me to then release the adjustment layer to sit on top of the target layer ?

Yes.

It doesn’t sit on top, it gets nested:

Trying it yourself should make it clearer to you that merely reading my brief descriptions and viewing my screenshots.

Ok facing a problem when I go to the adjustment studios and scroll down from the available list, I get shadows and highlights Layer, but when I click on it it gives me certain menu to make changers to the image directly. I am not able to drag it and place it in on the Top or Nested off any Layer as you say !! How do I drag it to the Layer studios ? There is no option for that?

You don’t drag it to the Layers Studio. When you choose an adjustment from the Adjustments Studio it’s added as an adjustment layer, and you can drag that layer up/down/sideways in the Layers Studio just like any other layer.

So if to begin with I only have two layers Pixel Layer and Fill layer, is this placement of the Brightness & contrast and Highlights&Shadows Adjustment Layer proper ? is this where the adjustment Layer has to be placed ? if I only want it to affect the subject and not the fill Layer aswell ?

 Please see the attached picture.

That looks as though it should work as desired. Did it give you the expected result?

No ! It is also changing the colour of the fill layer aswell which I do not want.

Try grouping or nesting, as discussed earlier in the thread.

The quickest way to resolve this problem would be for you to upload a copy of the APhoto document to the forum (as shown with your adjustments in place)

You can blur out the man's face if you don't want it shown

But that is what I am confused here. In my example in this image below what would be my target Layer fill Layer ?or pixel layer ? You said I should drag and it leaves until I see a blue horizontal line. But I drag it to the fill Layer or the pixel layer ?

In your first post here you have kept the adjustment Layer above fill Layer and in your second post you have kept it below pixel layer ! So I am really confused here !

I am sorry I don’t know what an Aphoto document is ? Where will I find it ?

The APhoto document is the document you are working on. Sorry, but I do not use an iPad so I can't tell you where it is on your device, hopefully someone else will

So I have not created any new document I have directly started working by importing my photo to Affinity Photo from photos App in my iPad

What happens when you save the document, (not export) it is that file which is the APhoto file.

Yes it gets saved in Affinity Photo and how does one share that ?

When you post to the forum you will see an option to attach a file.

Can you then not navigate to your "it gets saved in Affinity Photo" location and attach that file?

Thanks,

This is what I see in my Layers panel which explains what is wrong

Your adjustments layers are "child" layers of your fill layer

Why the iPad is displaying them like you have posted I have no idea, maybe someone else, with an iPad, can explain

Actually it was not a child layer earlier ! But @Alfred kept saying I need to Nest it by dragging so that it becomes Nested and thats what I did ? And that is what I was asking him do I Nest it with the Fill Layer or the Pixel Layer ?

So what is the solution ? what do I need to do ?

Nesting them with the pixel layer should work

or unnest them from the fill layer and just place them below your fill layer (unnested)

But like I said I don't have an iPad so things may be a bit different re my instructions

So is it not Nested right now with Fill Layer ? that small Drop Down Icon which appears on the Left Top side of Fill Layer that does not suggest it is Nested ?

Earlier I had kept it Un-Nested from the Fill Layer and below the Fill Layer only. But I felt it was changing the whole image which I did not want. I only want the Adjustment to happen with my Pixel Layer and not Fill Layer.
