No sure why some assets I just bought from Retro Supply open in photo even though they have the .afdesign extension?

Thanks,

Designer, Publisher and Photo all use the same file format. The extension just identifies the 'preferred' app but you can use any of the three to open /edit the files, though available features and tools will vary within each app.

M1 IPad Air 10.9/256GB   lpadOS 17.1.1 Apple Pencil (2nd gen).
Affinity Photo 1.10.5 Affinity Design 1.10.5
Affinity Publisher 2, Affinity Designer 2, Affinity Photo 2 and betas.

Hi DM1.  Yes thanks, and I know you are on here quite a bit with solutions and such. I didn’t state this but I do understand that the format is all the same between these apps, but affinity released the .afdesign, .afphoto and .afpub formats so the app that wrote the file would have an association to open the the file-creating a link to the file originator.

So why does affinity photo default to opening .afdesign files on my iPad? That’s the problem I have and what I asked about.

thanks,

jim

It shouldn’t do that. It sounds like the file association is messed up in iOS. If you use files app and long press on one of the afdesign files , then look at the 'info' tab, does it state Affinity Designer Document?

Hi DM!,

Yes, it does say Affinity Designer Document. (I even tried opening again to make sure this one does indeed open in photo.) Quite frustrating.

What options do you see if you long-press on the document in the Files app and choose ‘Share’?

Hi Alfred,

I see Affinity Photo listed first and then a bunch of other apps, then when I hit the 3 dots for more options, Designer is within this list.

@DM1 @Alfred Thanks guys, it “appears” to be working now. I launched it through the share with and selected Designer and it seems to have an association with it now. I tested by also opening Photo and going to another design file and opened it… it went straight to Designer. Hopefully it stays this way.

Thanks for your help.
