I find it easier to choose the perfect crop when the background is even darker than the currently applied overlay, present in application's build 1.9.2.1035.

It's been mentioned before in 2019, in the first topic that pops up for the query "affinity photo choose how much to darken on crop" in an omnipresent, but not universally loved, search engine.

Hi and thank you!

I figured that the previous post wasn't posted in this subforum - it was under one of the question forums.

I didn't see another topic when searching for this option under Feature Requests & Suggestions, but let me know if I missed such and I'll be okay with archiving my thread.

Actually, that’s my mistake, sorry; you are correct that the other linked post is in the “Questions” section.
There is at least one other suggestion for this sort of thing but it was moved to the “Older Feedback” section some time ago for some reason (possibly when a major release came out):
https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/24605-darken-border-slider-in-crop/
(I don’t think the threads in “Older Feedback” are looked at by the staff any more.)
Please forgive my rush to judgement; we get lots of multiple postings and yours looked a likely (but incorrect) culprit.
I think this posting is perfectly valid, unless anyone else has a problem with it.
