jamesgangcreative Posted July 22, 2021 Posted July 22, 2021 What do all the Edit settings actually mean? How do they relate to just editing a style? What is Preserve Local Formatting? As opposed to Express? Or Foreign? :-) Quote
sfriedberg Posted July 22, 2021 Posted July 22, 2021 While I won't claim the Affinity help files and online manual are great, some of those questions are answered there. First of all, that list of "Apply ..." options has nothing at all to do with editing a style. They have to do with applying the style, as currently defined, to your content. The names of the options are, well, unfortunate. I recommend you read the help page titled "Using text styles", because if I tell you what they mean, you will disbelieve. "Update 'Body Text' " is going to modify (edit) the style to match the currently selected content. Old Bruce 1 Quote

I have found some of the help pages quite good. Others, not so much. :-) PS I was wrestling with trying to find what the text style settings were, after the fact, you know, as a reminder when working ... and I stumbled upon "Character" and "Paragraph" ... so I could see the font size and leading ... that was making me crazy. I was going into "edit" to just look at the settings each time. It really is a powerful program; I had a friend who was excellent with InDesign and she always was harping on me to learn it. "The learning curve is too great," I would whine and just kept doing the book formatting in Word. And, the cost. OMG. I am so happy I found APub; and fortunately I have spent a lot of time in Word.docx, and Photoshop, so much of this (and APhoto) translate. I know people how have used Word for years and have no clue how to set a header or footer. G Quote
Wosven Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 The fun part is that most of those programs work the same, and learning one is like learning the others. Features could have slighty diferent names or be placed in different menus, but there's not so many ways and logic to implement them. That's the same with coding. I had fun learning Bash script in Linux, to realise I could do it also on OS X with slighty different cvommand sometimes, and MS-Dos or Shell script and Windows became easier. MikeTO 1 Quote

I learned MS-Dos first, as it was the only choice (1984 or so) :-) WYSIWYG was so refreshing to not have to spend hours to just bold something. I've been using Macs since 2000, when I worked in an agency and all the designers had them. I had one at work, then would come home to a PC, and I realized after awhile that made no sense. I've worked with colleagues who have Windows laptops and I'm amazed at the number of steps they sometimes have to do to find something, or get into a program... but it's what you're used to eventually that wins the day. Like any experienced photographer will say "The best camera for that shot is the one you have." h_d 1 Quote Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6 Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 | Beta versions as they appear. I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
