Staff Dan C Posted July 22, 2021 Staff Share Posted July 22, 2021 Hi @Adder7806, Welcome to the Affinity Forums We’re sorry to hear that your Affinity document is no longer opening for you. Please upload the file to us using the below link and we’ll take a further look at the file to see if we can recover any of its contents. https://www.dropbox.com/request/BH6roc6bmi9okMKOiY1d We would obviously also like some additional information to see if we can work out the cause of the problem and stop it happening in future. To assist this process, as well as uploading your file, please can you also tell us the following: 1. Which Operating System are you using? 2. Which version of Affinity did the file last get saved in? 3. What drive type was the file last saved to (select more than one if needed)? Local disk USB disk/Flash disk Google Drive folder OneDrive folder iCloud folder Dropbox folder Network location Other (please specify) 4. Any other information you think would help us try to find the problem? We suggest that you check to see if you have any backups of the document available in case we’re unable to recover the file. The investigation process can take some time, but we’ll be back in contact with our findings.
Adder7806
Thank you for your help, Dan. 1. Windows 10 2. Affinity 1.9.2.1035 3. Local Disk Samsung SSD 4. Not the first time this has happened. Maybe my file got to large? Also seems more likely to happen the longer the Affinity App has been running. Normally the save process is quick but when this happens the save takes a long time and then something goes wrong at the end in the 'load' portion of the save- I think. It's not a big deal if I don't get it back. Nothing important, just something I work on for fun and I'll have it recreated (more or less) fairly soon. I was just frustrated yesterday. How old is your most recent backup? Recover something is better than loose all the work I have done. I have a backup in pdf but I have no backup in afpub. I used Affinity Publisher for other works, never had this kind of problem. How can I do to recover the truncated file? Thank you Maudopix

Adder7806
Quick update; Affinity is quickly becoming unusable for me. The save function fails 50% of the time now. Uninstalled and reinstalled the Photo app but that hasn't helped. Often I'll have to open the Task Manager and End Task just to get it to close as it often becomes unresponsive. Not sure what's changed. Frustrating.
vogelap
Edit... Nevermind. I read the thread and answered my own questions. How much memory in your machine and how.large is the file you're working with? Adder7806... What are your system specs? What version of Photo? How large is the file you're working with? Adder7806
I have a good system. 32 GB of Ram. The file is big (13GB) so that's probably it. I'll reduce it as much as I can and see if that helps.

Adder7806
Local Drive. Samsung 4 GB SSd. Not sure what's going on. File size didn't matter. Any adjustment, brightness, levels, took a long time to apply and when it was complete that layer, while still there, would not display. I've tried hardware acceleration on and off. Small files. Big files. Different adjustments. Restarts. Something in my system isn't playing nice. Only programs I run are Spotify and Affinity. Some web browsing. No games. Strong computer. Problems are fairly recent. Was working fine until about two months ago.

Ok, so doing simple math, unless the 4GB SSD is a typo, you're about 9GB in the Red, ie; short. That would be like wanting to store a softball in a shirt pocket, just doesn't fit well. Staff Dan C Posted July 30, 2021 Staff Share Posted July 30, 2021 @Adder7806, it may be your GPU drivers causing the slowdowns and non-responsive hanging you're seeing in the app currently, so we can certainly look to resolve this. However a 13GB Affinity Photo file can contain a very large amount of pixel data, alongside adjustments etc, and it's likely that you're running out of memory when trying to save the file, at which point the app has to write temporary data files to your hard drive, rather than your RAM, which will considerably slow the process. Unfortunately with a file this large, I'm not sure what to suggest to avoid this, as the RAM requirements will likely exceed your current RAM limit. Either you can reduce your file size, or increase your RAM cache. Can you please confirm for me, what are the physical dimensions of the canvas in Affinity Photo? 13GB may possibly be one of the largest .afphoto files I've heard of so I'm just trying to understand why the file is this large. In regards to your GPU drivers, please download the latest copy of drivers directly from your manufacturer, but do not install this. With the driver downloaded, navigate the the below link and download DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller). With DDU downloaded, run this app to remove all previous versions of GPU drivers from your system, leaving you with the basic Microsoft Display Driver only. https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html Now, install the latest driver we've just downloaded, then restart your system and launch the Affinity app once again. Does this resolve the rendering issues for you please?
Adder7806
I do a lot of photo manipulation and can get quite a few layers. Also, and maybe I missed this setting, but Affinity keeps off canvas information when you crop so it's still there even if it's been visually removed. I'll try updating the drivers and post an update.
Adder7806
Installed the new drivers. Testing now. You brought up the size of the file. I checked earlier versions and they are at 2.5 GB. Then I cropped it so that should have reduced it. The next thing I did is resize the document and that's what exploded the file size. I checked other files and it seems pretty consistent. Most files are around the same 2.5 GB but if I've resized the document it jumps up to 12 or more.
