Affinity Photo closes unexpectedly in less than 3 minutes of use. July 18 / 2021 - Last Update

The problem occurs after updating all my Affinity programs to version - 1.9.2.1035 -

I start working on affinity photo, and in a short time it closes unexpectedly. After a short time of use, less than 3 minutes.

It has been closed to me 2 times in a row. 

The first time I was working with the quick selection tool; and in the second, I was adding effects to a text.

In both cases it was suddenly shut down.

If anyone had the same problem. Did you solve it? If you managed to solve it, please tell me how you did it.

Hey CarlosC, welcome to the Affinity Forums.

As Pšenda suggested, please try disabling OpenCL from Preferences > Performance. Can you also provide any crash reports and tell us what graphics card and driver you have?

Affinity Store version - Go to %AppData%\Affinity\Photo\1.0\CrashReports\reports

Microsoft Store version - Go to %AppData%\Affinity\Photo\1.0 (Store)\CrashReports\reports

Beta - Go to %AppData%\Affinity\Photo\1.0 (Beta)\CrashReports\reports

You can acccess the AppData folder by pressing the Windows key + R on your keyboard and then just type %AppData%

Hi, I think I experienced the same issue.

If I would like to open one RAW photo, it works well, but If I open another (or more) RAW file, or I started to work with it, my screens start to blinking, and Affinity Photo has crashed.

The options below, when I experienced this issue:

After that I restart Photo, and I turned off Hardware Acceleration, now Photo works, but I feel slower than when I used HW acceleration, so I would like to use HW acceleration.

Affinity Photo: 1.9.2.1035
nVidia Studio Driver: 471.41 (and I tried with 471.11, too)
Windows 10 Home 64bit 21H1 19043.1110

Config:
AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
Geforce GTX 1050
32 GB ram
dual screens

I've attached 3 crash reports, when I experienced this issue:

I have experienced the same issue as CarlosC and becike. This has happened to me several times when trying to work on the same file. I open a document I'm working on (not new), then within a few minutes, the program is unresponsive before it eventually shuts down. I open the same file again and I am able to use it for a few minutes before it inevitably shuts down. The only things I'm doing in the document include moving text boxes, duplicating layers, or resizing graphics.

I have the current version of Affinity Photo, 1.9.2

I am using an HP Envy Desktop, i7, 8 core processor, only a few months old.

I tried attaching both the file and a screenshot of what happens when the program shuts down, but the forum won't let me. The attach feature just says "Loading..." and nothing happens when I click it. I enjoy using Affinity and I hope this problem can be solved quickly.

Have you tried to deactivate the hardware acceleration in Affinity Photo?

If you've updated your graphics drivers and you are still experiencing issues, try removing the driver and reinstalling a fresh copy from the Nvidia website. Sometimes, just updating doesn't seem to resolve this. If that still doesn't work, you might try to completely remove them using DDU.

Alternatively, keep OpenCL off on the retail version and then download and install the beta. It has already had significant OpenCL updates over the retail version.

Hi Chris B,

I've tried to remove nVidia drivers, and install a full fresh copy from nVidia website, it didn't work for me.

But, I installed Affinity Photo Customer Beta 1.10.0.1112 and I tried it with turned on OpenCL option, and everything works well. 😊 So I think the issue is in the 1.9.2.1035 version of Affinity Photo.

Do you have information about when will be a new version released?

Hello, sorry for the time to reply.

I am attaching you the specifications of my computer.


Affinity Photo report folder is empty.

    I would like to add that my hard drives are quite full, however the main SSD drive, where Affinity Photo is installed, has an available capacity of 32GB. I also use this computer for video games, and it has Nvidia GeForce Experience installed.

At the time the error occurred 2 times in a row, Photoshop was also open, but no files were open in it.

    I tried using it again after closing Photoshop, and Affinity Photo did not close again. I don't know if it was a coincidence or if there was a problem between both software. If so, I think it could be the case that the RAM memory was overloaded due to the space that each program temporarily reserves to record the work history (that's how I understand that they work); Like photoshop, I had my web browser open to do research with about 9 or 10 tabs but only about 5 active tabs.

I use 3 screens, and one of them is a Display Tablet (Huion kamvas 20 pro 2019), in which I work all my designs and digital graphic editions.

Hey CarlosC, do you ever get a low HDD space warning? 

I purposely only keep about 15GB free on my main C drive to check for issues such as this and often I'll fail doing things like a panorama when I end up using swap memory. 32GB can easily be taken up by a large panorama and perhaps a large document.

The Selection Brush Tool can eat in to RAM easily and if you're on a large document could potentially eat up that remaining 32GB space. I'd check Task Manager (keep it open) and repeat what you've been doing to see if all your available RAM is being used.
