linssen
I've been waiting to see the Photos extension for Affinity Photo, but there's not much info as yet. Ideally, it'd be amazing to have all of the features available to the main app. Will change made therein be non-destructive? I'm keen to purchase, but I also want to keep my library where it is, in iCloud. 1105Maxinedex and 1106Sandrakn
JFisher
Hi Linssen Welcome to the Forums :)It doesn't offer all the features that the main app does as it is just an extension, but it is new, so you can expect more features to be added in the future. It is only available in the latest customer beta of the app and should be in the full version in the next update.Jack
Staff MEB Posted November 3, 2015 Staff Share Posted November 3, 2015 Hi lissen, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) Here's the current state of the Affinity Retouching extension. All controls are exposed in the screenshot. Apple Photos lets you revert back to the original image if needed. Note that currently the extension is in Beta (in development/testing) and it's not yet available on the Mac App Store (MAS) version. To be able to use it now, you need to purchase the application from the Mac App Store and then install the Affinity Photo Customer Beta to get access to the extension. It will be integrated in the Mac App Store version in the next update before Christmas if everything goes well. linssen 1 Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
linssen
Thanks a lot for the feedback, that screenshot was exactly what I needed to know! I guess the next question is, how can you make use of the full suite of tools, but manage the photos themselves from Photos? I mean is it possible to open the photo in Affinity Photo, and make edits that appear on the version in Photos? I guess I'm looking for an Apple / pay once version of Lightroom / Photoshop, here. (answered) I'm keen to purchase, but I also want to keep my library where it is, in iCloud. I second @linssen's request. I'd like to keep Photo's asset management capability (not much else out these) but want to add more of Affinity Photo's capabilities than just the retouching extension. I checked the beta site and it doesn't list anything about any extensions. Can anyone discuss the future of Photos extensions from Serif? anon1
They'll make a real DAM in 2016 (unlike Apple photos) and this will work 100% along with AP so there we go ;)

If so, when will the beta be released? Thanks
anon1
Yes Affinity as a part of serif to be even more precise Just "news" are announced for 2016 The publisher beta will be first an then we'll see Maybe 2nd or 3rd quarter I think publisher will come out pretty good with the special pdf options and printing stuff so I think it won't be a long beta. linssen
That's very interesting. Short answer to all this is: extensions provides stripped down, but spot tools for Photos, and there's a DAM on the way.
anon1
I think the extension is fine for those who use Apple photos. Everyone who is more serious would not use Apple photos anyway - if you are skilled and using Apple photos nevertheless, please don't feel offended ;) but maybe you'll see the benefits of better software as soon as you try out the future affinity DAM ;)

I'm trying to help my daughter's co-worker who has 82GB of photos and is having issues with her MacBook Pro slowing down. No surprise, especially since she has a mid 2012 13" base model, but I'll upgrade some of her hardware then work on figuring out a better workflow for her. AP with DAM could be what she needs. She's not computer literate but uses the photos as part of a side job she has. iPhoto/Photos has been enough for her needs but it might be time for her to evaluate her future needs. The first DAM I used was Canto Cumulus a real long time ago but I had money at work to buy these overly expensive enterprise level applications. Not any more! I just found Affinity Photo a few weeks ago and bought it so my adult daughter and I could learn it before traveling to Fairbanks Alaska next March for a wedding and to view the aurora borealis. anon1
I showed a friend of mine AP but he's also just a casual photographer and went back to picasa - what a pity. But he has just no use for such a great software but a DAM would be fine for him. Especially if it would include some basic editing functionality in itself. I´ll definitely show it him as soon as it´s available. If it offers easy organization, cropping, color correction and this haze filter which makes casual users scream (also me sometimes ;) and then he´ll be ready to go and I think it´s the same with many others.....
