Hi,

attached is a simplified master page setup for a book we want to layout. The book is double sided. Therefore, we created some double sided master pages, one with headings and text ("Text with Headline") and one with text only ("Text"). Master pages are all hierarchically and have assigned a shared master page with a footer.

Page 2 and 3 have both the same master page "Text with Headline", here everything is displayed as expected.

I duplicated both pages to page 4+5 and assigned master page with text only ("Text") to the right page, as only a heading should be displayed on the left side. Now the heading on the left page disappeared and can't be edited anymore. The heading on the right page is now in footer. Oops?

A second unexpected  behaviour:

I created another double sided master page with headings and text (Text with Headline #2). Here, the text boxes take the whole page height, but the heading boxes have text flow / text wrapping settings, so that the text starts automatically below the heading, if the heading height is being changed, without adjusting the main text box. If I assign this master page to a double sided page (pages 6+7) and then assign the master page with only text to the right page, the text flow of the heading on the right side is still active, although it is assigned only to the left page.

Are we abusing master pages? This feels like a serious bug to me. Or do you have suggestions how to better set up our master pages?

Are you wanting to use the "Headline" for divisions such as Chapters or Parts? Will they be starting on the left and the right?

The way I set things up I have a basic Two Page spread that is linked text frames, with a header and footer if needed (for Book name/section name / Page No.)  and most of the book will use that Bulk Pages Master. Then there are two, two page spreads, one for Chapters starting on the Left and the other for Chapters starting on the Right. They may or may not reuse the headers and footers from the Bulk Pages.

If you want you can then just use the Right hand page from the Right hand Master on right page and the Left Hand page from the Left hand Master on the left page of a spread that uses two pages of headlines. Or you could make a fourth Master Page. Have to ask yourself how many times am I going to have tiny short chapters of less than one page?

When it is simple like this I just use copy and paste to keep things the same size.

I think your problems are caused by the text wrap interfering in the flow of reapplied masters. I would just make the main text frames shorter and not rely on text wrap of the headline.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
