I want to number the pages in my document. But not from the front page! So the second page should bear as the page number 1.

However, in Section Manager the field is "Start on page: 1" grey, so I can't set anything.

What am I doing wrong?

Section 1 will always start on physical page 1 (which is the field that is grayed out).

You need to make section 2, by clicking on the page icon: image.png.bec863885278999fda4591326b5c4c3c.png

You can then say that section 2 starts on (physical) page 2, and that its page numbering should start at 1.

The page numbering now starts from page 2, but the cover remained with a "1". How do I get that off?

Or create and assign a master page that doesn't have a number.

Or place a white rectangle over the number on the edition page.

There is already a coloured item on page so it should handle the problem. I guess objects stack in creation order so if you add page number last it will be in front. It can be dropped to the bottom (behind a graphic or white rectangle) using layer palette.

I had chosen Alfred's solution, because this is a possibility from the software.

Placing an element that covers the page number is in my view a stopgap measure.

After all, if I came up with a complicated design for the page numbering and wanted to place a difficult element on the front page (for example, a photo with many details), it would be difficult to cover the unwanted number neatly.

I think the software solution is the most sensible.

On page x go to the layers panel, control click on the Master Page and select Edit Detached. Turn off the page number text layer. This will affect only Page x.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
