I just put together a quick four-page lorem ipsum document to check Publisher's PDF table-of-contents feature, and there's a bug that mystifies me: The ToC doesn't include the first entry.

Like I said, it's a four-page document. On each page, there's one short paragraph styled "Hed," which is the only style that's checked on to show up in the ToC. But when I generates the ToC, only the second through fourth headers show up in it.

I've included both the AFPUB file and the PDF I generated. I tried to use common fonts (Times, Helvetica, Impact).

And I'm aware that the ToC text frame is off the page; I'm interested in creating a PDF that has a PDF table-of-contents, without a regular appearing-on-the-page ToC. I do this in InDesign all the time. In any event, the first heading is skipped in the regular ToC as well.

I suspect this is the problem. At least if I move it onto page 1, tick "Include entries before TOC," then click Update, the first "Hed" entry shows up.

EDIT: Actually, just clicking "Include entries before TOC" without moving the TOC anywhere includes the first page entry ... but of course since it is not on any page it won't be included in the export.

By PDF Table-of-Contents do you mean the PDF Bookmarks list?

If so, why not just create an Anchor for each Heading, and in the anchor settings indicate to export it as a bookmark. Then you don't need a Publisher TOC in the document at all.

OK, thanks for the work-around. But that's an extra step, and the basic functionality ought to work correctly, right?

I haven't fiddled around with anchors yet. Is this an automatic thing, where I can set each heading as being an anchor once, and that will get applied to all headings of that style? Or would I have to go an click each one individually?

Yes! Thank you! This worked! Problem solved!

It appears to be something you'd have to do manually for each heading, so definitely not the best way if your other approach works. So it's good you got that working :)
