Resampling before Saving

Recommended Posts

Hi Lamont.

There are a few different options for resampling, I have taken some information from the inbuilt help in the app and have found information that explains each resampling option. This should help :)

Nearest Neighbour—simple resampling which has the fastest processing time. Use for hard-edge images.

Bilinear—algorithmic resampling for use when shrinking images.

Bicubic—algorithmic resampling for use when enlarging images. Resampling is smoother than Bilinear but has a slower processing time.

Lanczos 3—complex algorithmic resampling which gives the best results but with the longest processing time. Available as 'separable' and 'non-separable'; the latter gives marginally better results, but is slightly slower than 'separable'.

Thanks for the reply.

My question is not so much about the resampling options and differences between them. I only really use bicubic of the ones offered, because it is the only one that gives me results I like. Lancos 3 results for me always in terrible harshness.

My question was really more about why I have to choose a resampling option when saving an image. In no other photo editing software see an option for resampling when saving an image. Why does saving require resampling if the image is not at the same time being scaled?

Hi Lamont,

The resample algorithm will only be used if you change the image dimensions. If you are simply exporting the image there's nothing to resample. Maybe we should grey out the Resample dropdown until the user changes one of the dimension fields. I will log this to be looked at.

Thanks.

Resampling is used when rasterising for export.  If you have image elements in your document, they will use resampling to put them into export DPI.

An Affinity document allows for image elements to be resized.  Unlike Photoshop, resizing is non-destruction - the original image data is maintained, but it is resampled for displaying on screen, and resampled if you bake the image for export.

... and if you previously resized the document using bicubic, yes.

It would help to know where that quote originated.
