Masking vectors (fonts and shapes)?

Hey all,

is there a way to mask away parts of vector shapes without the need of rasterizing the layer? 
Snipping away parts of a vector could be an alternative, too.

What doesn’t work in my case is the the subtracting function, since I don’t want it to create an outline at those borders.

I hope I could make myself clear 🙄

You need to subtract from a separate shape, and then use the new shape to mask the original one. For example, if you want to take a bite out of this piece of bread

you can cover it with a rectangle, take a bite out of the rectangle

and then, in the Layers panel, drag the ‘bitten rectangle’ layer and drop it onto the thumbnail of the bread layer:
