Hello everyone!

I started working with Affinity Photo yesterday and I already got stuck. Unfortunately I can‘t seem to find any info on the issue, so now I‘m here.

As I was playing around with the adjustment & live filters, I noticed that some of the layers did not have any effects on my image. They appear in my layer overview with a black rectangle instead of a white square and just do nothing. It‘s even for adjustment types I already tried and had seen working before.

I have no clue, what‘s going on and I can‘t go forward with editing my image.

I attached a screenshot of the issue. Help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Hi,

if the adjustment thumbnail in the layer stack is fully black, it could be inverted to pure white by using the channels panel, and select invert. The adjustment should then work as intended.

Awesome, that worked, thanks!

But why does it do this in the first place? For every new layer that I now create, I have to do the extra step of inverting it, before I can use it.

If you have a keyboard attached, there are modifier short-keys that invert a mask during layer creation.

Or you had a very small selection area active while creating the layers. The selection automatically becomes the layer mask.

Just check the thumbnail if this happens again, to find out (maybe use undo).

Again, thanks a lot! That was the right hint!

Don‘t know how it happened, but I must really had something selected.

I switched to the „Selection“ persona, clicked on the three dots in the top left and hit „Deselect“. Now the layers work as intended again.
