Affinity Designer and Publisher crash upon Windows 10 clean reinstall

Recommended Posts

Here's a summary of my problem:

  • I suffered Designer and publisher crashes since day one. I never used the Photo app so I can't say.
  • I  reinstalled my Windows 10. The OS build is 19042.1052
  • Only Office Suite, Affinity Designer, Publisher and Mozilla Firefox are installed at the moment.
  • None of the listed third party apps installed.
  • Use of either Designer or Publisher can trigger both crash at the same time. Such as opening a file, copy or paste, saving or exporting.
  • Once crash, only restart of Windows can launch the apps.
  • The CrashReports folders of both apps are empty. No crash reports ever generated.

This has become such a pain. Somebody please tell me what to do next.

Hello @Franxon welcome to the forums.

Have you tried to deactivate the hardware acceleration in both programmes? Here's a how to.

And after that please tell us more about your computer.

Did you reinstall the Affinity applications after reinstalling Windows? (I ask because in some scenarios the applications can survive a Windows reinstall, but I would not expect them to work properly.)

Further to what @walt.farrellhas mentioned, normally a crash when opening files, is caused by the graphics card drivers and performing a clean install of them would be the 1st thing we would suggest to try for this type of issue.  If that fails, we would then request you see if there's anything in the Event Viewer which may help show why Affinity is crashing.

I suspected as much. So I

  • Reinstalled windows (OS build is 19042.1052)
  • Re-downloaded and reinstalled Affinity apps.
  • Updated my UHD graphics drive to 27.20.100.9466 (30 Mar 2021).
  • turned off hardware acceleration.
  • turned off Antivirus.

The apps crashed again and now I'm at my wits end.

Could you check the Event Viewer for the log file, to do that see here and it post here?

Forgive me but I might not post the full logs. I searched for "Affinity" and there are 8 events pertaining Affinity in the Application log (Windows was reinstalled 12 hrs ago so the log file was short), all of which are about installation (information level). No warning logs or error logs. Meanwhile Designer and Publisher must have crashed over 10 times today. On the other hand, the error of Inkscape was registered. No hits in other logs.

Tell me what I should do next.
