It could be something simple like having Protect Alpha enabled on the brushes Context toolbar. If it is, disable and try again but it it still fails to edit can you do a short screen recording showing you attempting to edit the mask.

Thank you.  I worked out the problem yesterday, after a short hiatus. I attached a posterise adjustment layer to the masked layer. I must have done this before deselecting the masked area.  That was a big mistake.  My solution was to delete the mask and posterise layer. Then I used the selection-brush tool to isolate the desired part of the layer, followed by a mask.  I added a posterise layer to the top of the stack; then I attached it to the appropriate layer.   I was now able to make the desired adjustments to the mask.
