Affinity Publisher Customer Beta - 1.10.0.1085

Recommended Posts

Status: Beta
Purpose: Fixes / Improvements
Requirements: Purchased Affinity Publisher
Mac App Store: Not Submitted
Download: Download
Auto-update: Not Available

---

We are pleased to announce that Affinity Publisher Customer Beta 1.10.0.1085 is now available as a download from the link above.

If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.

Due to current and anticipated changes to help with performance issues this version is now 1.10.0 and replaces the previous 1.9.4 beta. All previous changes from 1.9.4 have been rolled into this beta.

As such, we strongly recommend that you do not use this beta for real work as data could be lost and the files you save are not guaranteed to open in previous / future versions of Affinity Designer.

Now we finally know: 1.10 before (and possible others) before 2.0

But since you have not released 1.9.4, you have put us in a bit of a bind here. Remember that your recommendation for the 1.9.4 betas was this:

We recommend that you use this beta in preference to the store version if you are affected by any of the issues listed below.

I have followed that advice, particularly as 1.9.4.1076 "Fixed issue with Paragraph Minimum letter spacing." That fix is fairly major in that it causes reflow. Therefore, I have been using 1.9.4 betas to use that fix so my documents will not reflow once 1.9.4 would be released. But now there is no 1.9.4, and the current recommendation is

That leaves us stuck, with no recommended version for fixing the text reflow. In order to open my existing "real work" documents that were made using the 1.9.4 betas "in preference to the store version," as advised, I only have these options: 1) open in 1.9.3 release where layout will reflow due to the unfixed bug, 2) use this new beta for real work despite your strong recommendation not to, or 3) use the last 1.9.4 beta exclusively and sit out the 1.10 beta process entirely until release. Option 3 seems the only reasonable choice to me.

I beg you to consider locking down 1.9.4 and releasing before moving on.

How is this supposed to work? I can open the Glyph browser & set it to show Apple Color Emoji, but only a few of them show up. The others are there because a tooltip shows up with the numeric info & glyph name, but there is no character thumbnail visible so no way to choose which one to use by browsing through them visually:

I can also insert them using Font Book via drag & drop but that is not convenient.

BTW, it is the same in the AD & AP betas & in the Designer persona of the APub beta, the glyphs that are visible change if I click on them or scroll in the Glyph browser & are not the ones that are inserted if I double-click on most of them.

It looks like the thumbnails are being mapped to some random section of memory.

I second this. It would be great if the store releases could be refreshed to the latest 1.9.4 bug fixes as 1.10 betas go into play. Another reason for this, other that what GarretM30 stated above, is that once you open and save a 1.9.3 document into a 1.10 format you can't open with an older version, and the same holds true for 1.9.4 (to be fair I haven't tried that but guessing this from past beta experiences and also the warning to proceed when opening in 1.9.4 and beyond). So really sticking to or re-downloading the last 1.9.x versions would probably be the safest best as stated - or is it? What is the stability report on the 1.10 versions? I do heed warnings but I was designing in some of the earliest Publisher beta and I have survived quite intact through all that. So I am left wondering.

Apart from the bug fixes in 1.9.4 and 1.10, I couldn't see myself going back to the current store versions. The new versions are incredibly fast compared to the current store versions by a factor of 10x+.

I tried the system-wide Mac shortcut for Emoji: cmd-cntr- space and it brought them up, but it's affinity's own interface. I've just tracked it down under 'Edit' menu - 'Emoji & Symbols' - seems an odd place to put it!

That is the standard location for that option.  Same place you will find it in Pages and Safari, for example.

Thanks for that hint -- I never realized there was a system wide shortcut for the Mac Character Viewer (which includes but is not limited to the Apple Emoji font)! Apart from the light or dark UI setting I don't think it is using the Affinity UI.

I still wonder what's up with with the Glyph viewer display of the Apple Emoji font -- unless I am the only one seeing this I think it qualifies as a bug.

Just a reminder: Never use betas In any software for "keeper" or serious work; use it only as a testing ground. That way: no surprises.

I also use music software and that is rule #1 for existing or new projects...unless you like losing your work.

The current beta (if any) is always available via a pinned topic at the top of the relevant Beta forum.
