Affinity Publisher: Filler Text is incomprehensible

Recommended Posts

Hi, all,

The Filler text feature is particularly badly translated into French and this leads to major misunderstandings.

  • ‘Insert Filler text’ is translated as ‘Insérer un texte d’exemple’ (Insert example text). This is particularly wrong except in one very special case. This is obviously an interpretation that probably originated from Google translate. It should be translated as ‘Insérer un texte de remplissage’.
  • ‘Expand Field’ has been translated as ‘Déployer le champ’. This is nonsense. Déployer means to unfold, to unroll, to enlarge. It should be translated as ‘Développer le champ d’action’ or better still ‘Transformer en texte modifiable’ (Transform into editable text).

😁It would be good if translators knew DTP, and if the language they translate into was their mother tongue rather than that of Google Translate.

That is just place holder text that is meant to show you a finished layout. It is not meant to make sense

The problem is the translation of the feature, not the feature nor the filler text.

I understand that, but here is a link about filler text that might be of interest to some readers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorem_ipsum

I did read once of a designer who used lorem ipsum text to demonstrate layout to a client, who was told firmly by the client "I don't want Latin.".

So sometimes filler text in the customer's language explaining in that filler text that it is just filler text to demonstrate layout can be a wise move to avoid getting a presentation into a pickle!

Pour ceux que cela intéresse et qui comprennent le français, l’article Wikipédia est plus approfondi en français.
For those who are interested and understand French, the Wikipedia article is more detailed in French.

Thanks for brining this to our attention @Pyanepsion, I have logged this with our translation team for further investigation :)

Please note -

I am currently out of the office for a short while whilst recovering from surgery (nothing serious!), therefore will not be available on the Forums during this time.

Should you require a response from the team in a thread I have previously replied in - please Create a New Thread and our team will be sure to reply as soon as possible.

Many thanks!

The original name "Expand Field" doesn't really make that much sense in English either for that matter.

The suggested "Transform into editable text" would be better, though I would suggest something more like "Convert Field to Text" or "Replace Field with Content".

"Expand Field" makes it sound like the field is getting larger or more complex, but the option actually eliminates the field instead...

Well, "Expand Field" is the generic term for replacing a special field with its contents.  Normally, fields are small things like page numbers.  If you insert Page Number into a footer, and later use Expand Field on it, the special field will get replaced with whatever the current page number is, as ordinary text.

The filler text just happens to be a special field that sizes itself to the whole series of linked text frames.

Ha! So the term ‘Expand Field’ is apparently incomprehensible in all languages! All the more reason to change it everywhere in all languages.

Expand Field’

"Expand variable" would be more logical, since it's not a field. Field, in French, is an input in a form, among other definitions relative to areas, but not suitable in this case (this translation is too literal, but we reported already some translation problems).
