Failed to open the file - The file includes features from a later version of Affinity.

Recommended Posts

Dear Affinity,

I am getting this error message a lot when trying to open files..

"Failed to open the file - The file includes features from a later version of Affinity."

I am using a PC with Windows and the desktop version. I have version 1.9.2.1035 which is the latest I believe. Desktop affinity updates automatically anyway I think.

Also, I created these files last night. On the same machine. Using the same software.

Is this a generic message for something else? Low memory or something?

It is a bit annoying. Sometimes I try later and the file opens, but it is really slowing me down.

It is also annoying that I have to shut the program down from task manager, because it insists:

"Quitting

At least one file is currently being opened. Please wait for files to load before quitting the application".

But the files don't load because of the former error message.

Have you tried Beta?

As Pšenda intimated this is probably a file from a Beta version.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.2
Affinity Designer 2.3.1 | Affinity Photo 2.3.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.3.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

@DavidJoons Can you provide a download link to one of the files that this occurs with?

In general are you saving locally or to an external location?

Did you purchase from the Affinity Store or Windows Store and which version of Windows is being used?

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I purchased from the Affinity Store and am using it on PC.

It's not one file in particular. It can happen with any of them. I wonder if it is the file size - they are appx 40mb each.

The other problem is that Affinity crashes a lot. If I have more than two files open at the same time and I save one, it will sometimes just get stuck on the save. However, the save does happen. On relaunching Affinity Designer if I access the file it has been updated. Again, 40mb+ file sizes. Affinity Designer probably crashes on me 20 times a day if I am using it a lot.

This is more of a problem if I have more files open together, so I am guessing memory related.

I think the just-released beta 1.10.0.1112 has a fix for this problem.

Seems to be an issue with embedded files, and exceeding a file-handle limit, and giving the wrong error message.

Edited to fix typo in release number. Sorry.

Er … that’ll be 1.10, not 1.11. ;)

That does sound promising! I appear to be on 1.9.2.1035.

How do I update Affinity designer? It's not prompting me (unlike Photo, which does).

The retail apps only prompt you when there’s a newer retail release. Version 1.10 is still in beta:

Windows 10, or Windows 11? That will be a mess again 🙂

No, nothing to do with Windows OS versions! The current retail release of Affinity Designer for Windows is 1.9.2, and the current beta version is 1.10.0.1112 (not, as Walt wrote, 1.11.0.1112).

Of course, it was an exaggeration and a point of possible confusion 10 vs 11.
