When I export my doc, one of my fonts slanted styles all look normal on the pdf.

Recommended Posts

I laid out a document using the Latin/English version of a font called "amiri." The regular and bold section all export properly, but any italicized/slants parts all come out looking regular (no italicization). I thought it was a problem with the font at first, but after much digging and testing, I've found the font works fine if I use software like LibreOffice to export it to pdf, or even the competing, popular photo editing software that shall not be mentioned in these parts. I even got in touch with the creator of the font, and they suggested the problem was with Affinity.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, @user123. :)

Which Affinity app(s) are you using, and on what platform? Text using the italic (‘Slanted’) styles of Amiri — bold or not — exports correctly for me from Affinity Designer on iPad.

Thanks for confirming that!

I downloaded Regular, Slanted & Slanted Bold from your post, then created a quick document in Publisher and exported using PDF (for export), as can be seen below, when previewing the PDF file it appears as though Slanted Bold and Regular worked as expected for me, however the Slanted font was also exported using Regular.

I note that when installing the Slanted font, the Windows preview for the font appears to show the regular glyphs, however they certainly appear italicised when used in Affinity -

This isn't something I've seen previously, usually the font preview here matches the font exactly, and this may be the cause of the issue you're seeing - though I'm yet to determine if this is an issue with the font, or an incompatibility that Affinity does not support. I've asked for some input from our team here to double check this :)

Yes, that's the one. I'm sharing the exact fonts from my font folder here as well if that helps.

My guess is you have multiple copies of the fonts installed.

The fonts you attached above are v0.107 - and given the file names are all caps, you got these somewhere.
LibreOffice also installs a version of these fonts - current version they install is v0.111.
The Google Fonts current version is v0.113.

So my guess is you have the older versions installed in your user fonts folder.
And the LibreOffice versions are installed in the main Windows fonts folder.
So this is confusing the fonts cache(s).

Make sure you only have one set of fonts installed.

It could be "Slanted" in the sub-family name.
Affinity apps seem to only accept certain words in there.
Previously there was an issue with another font which had "Plain" in there.
I changed it to "Regular" and then the font worked fine.

@User123

To test this I can make a set of fonts with Italic instead of Slanted.
First make sure you only have one version installed.
Then I can make the test version if are interested.

Oh geez, that took care of it. I could have sworn I checked the version a few days ago, and it was 0.113, but maybe in my hours of troubleshooting I switched the font files to an older version? No idea, but deleting the old version and installing the latest version fixed the problem. I mean, it ruined a bunch of my document and I'll have to go in and change all the italicized parts manually now, but that's all on me.

Sorry for wasting everyone's time on this. I feel like an idiot. :P

That should not happen as the names inside the fonts are the same.

Did you make sure you only have one version installed?
If you installed LibreOffice, it installed these fonts in C:\Windows\Fonts\

There is only one version in my fonts folder as far as I can see.

All the parts in my doc that had this italicized font have been replaced by a default font. The font name is still amiri, but the style section is blank, so I have to go and manually set those sections to italic. The previous version of the font I had installed called these slanted, and now calls them it italic, so I'm guessing that's where the trouble is coming from. Unless there is a quicker way to do it, I have to go through the doc and manually switch all those sections to italic. Not the end of the world or anything, just a mild hassle.

I just realized that the Google Fonts version has Italic not Slanted in the sub-family.
So that may have resolved the issue.

And is also why you had to reapply the Italic style (as the Slanted style was gone).
