Question about selection tools in Affinity Photo

Recommended Posts

I recently switched from Photoshop and I somewhat have a problem with the selection tools. When I use the tools like freehand selection for example, I don't get a sharp edge. When I want to refine it I can change the sharpness of the edge, but that makes the edge more fuzzy.

I am sure selecting with sharp edges must be possible - but somehow I don't find out how...

...does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forums @rabirius,

For creating sharp-edged selections try using the Pen Tool. Once you've completed outlining with the pen tool, in the left side of the Context Toolbar for the Pen Tool, you're presented with 2 options, Mask or Selection. Choosing the latter will provide a sharp selection.

Affinity Photo 2.3..; Affinity Designer 2.3..; Affinity Publisher 2.3..; Affinity2 Beta versions. Affinity Photo,Designer 1.10.6.1605 Win10 Home Version:21H2, Build: 19044.1766: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5820K CPU @ 3.30GHz, 3301 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s);32GB Ram, Nvidia GTX 3070, 3-Internal HDD (1 Crucial MX5000 1TB, 1-Crucial MX5000 500GB, 1-WD 1 TB), 4 External HDD

For clarity... What option is not available?

Can any selection tool be combined in the Selection Context Tool Bar choosing Type: ADD?

But there is NO pen tool type selecion there..... We just CANT combine 2 or more pen tool shapes in to one selecion.....
To do this I have to go around creating many separate shapes with a pen tool, then merge them and only then select those merged shapes and use them as a selection ... it's so annoying.
