It would be nice to have automatic update feature.
This is the algorithm how it could work:

1) When app is starting:
------
"New version X.X.X is available to download.
Would you like to turn on automatic update download in background while application is active?"
{Yes, turn it on}
{No}

[  ] Do not ask again
Info: you can always change this feature in application preferences.
------

After {Yes} app will set the proper feature (checkbox or dropdown list ) in preferences for this app.
After {No} will keep asking after every start until [ ] Do not ask again will be checked

2) When {YES} then when the application is running the update will be downloading in the background.

3) After download will be ready to install and application will be run again then it will ask user:
------
"Update has been downloaded and it is ready to install. Proceed with update ?"
{ Yes and always do it automatically when application is starting }
{ Yes but do it just once right now }
{ Not now }

Info: you can always change this feature in application preferences.

Not sure if there would be issues with this method being as there are a few ways of buying the software. Apple App store, Windows App Store, iOS store and lastly directly from Serif. I do prefer the method you described which is a common way for most applications, I think most if not all people who use software are used to something like that. Would be curious to know if this was possible with the current setup or if because of the various stores to buy from this would create trouble.
