Hi @SueWAuthor,
You probably have copied the text from somewhere? The formatting (background fill) info comes with it. Reverting to defaults will fix it.

Forgive me, I just got woke on Affinity's products today so I have a little bit of a learning curve ( though nearly every feature I am used to works beautifully ). I have Ai files that I am editing with in Designer, but I am also wanting to maintain a transparent background so that I can submit my newly designed logo for merchandise printing. I did purchase both Design and Photo.

If you open an Ai file and there is a default background as a layer part of the Ai file's layer structure, then hide that layer, which usually then gives you in ADesigner the Ai document's canvas size as a white shown doc canvas area. Now go to "File -> Document setup" and under the color tab set/enable the checkmark for "Transparent background". Afterwards the documents background should be transparent! - See also: Document setup
