Hi there

Just bought Affinity this week and enjoying it so far.

I have ticked the boxes to avoid orphans and widows but this means that many pages in my book start on the second line.

Is there any way of getting rid of this?

Cheers

Welcome to the forums @Burky

Can you show us – preferably with a full-screen screen-grab – what you can see?

P.S. It’s usually helpful if you can tell us which Affinity application you are using: Designer; Photo or Publisher. (In this case we can guess that it's Publisher but telling us up-front is better than us guessing.)

Hi Garry

Thanks for replying.

I have attached a screenshot.

The book I am setting has over 1000 quotes and they are mostly two or three lines long so would look silly if split. Therefore I ticked orphans and widows.  This works well but there is a problem with flow as many pages now begin with a blank line.

I could just do away with the blank line between quotes where this happens but that could cause serious problems later.

Otherwise Affinity is great (Affinity 1.9.3)

Cheers

Any ideas.

Do you possibly have a blank paragraph break between the quotes?

Hi Lukas

There is a blank line after each quote (two returns) otherwise they would all appear as one paragraph. Or is there a better way of doing this?

I have pasted three quotes in below...

‘She dealt with moral problems as a cleaver deals with meat.’
Joyce, Dubliners

‘Formerly, his heart had been as a locked casket with its treasure inside.’
Eliot, Silas Mariner

‘My heart wept for the sight of Olalla as a child weeps for its mother.’
Stevenson, Olalla

Pay attention to the two Paragraph Styles In the lower frames. Quote and Cite. They have settings for space before instead of the double returns which I removed.test.afpub

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Cheers, Old Bruce

That seems to work well.

Just need to go through the pages and get rid of all the extra newline returns!

The Find & Replace panel is your friend!
