I am trying to use a mask in Affinity Photo.  I have one image on one layer and another on another layer.  On the top Layer I add a mask. I then choose a brush and change the colour to black to remove a portion of the top layer so I can see the image below.  However If I want to add back part of the top layer I choose white and then paint over the portion I want to bring back but it continues to remove the top image layer.  I have no idea what I am doing wrong.  I am wondering if it is an issue with Affinity Photo.  I am using version 1.9.2.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forums @TKHussar,

Does the context toolbar look similar when you have a brush chosen

Is this how you have your layers set up?

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

I have issue with AP masking, unfortunately it is very irregular result, on more complex layers simply refuses to work, adversely on new file works perfectly fine. Both cases are simple. Eg adjustment color layer with mask doest work in stack of layers. It is frustrating to the bone. Please fix this issue. I've been working many years (over 20) on various software packages, but this is very new problem to me. Unpredictable results. M1 Mac Mini, 16GB (1.9.3 Affinity Photo).
