I'm sorry but this is sooo dumb! I've just lost HOURS of work, just because I'm working on a file from my external drive?

And worst yet, the preview version of the document can't be opened either! how can I restore it?

Hi @riga,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
I'm sorry you are having trouble opening the file. Do you mind uploading it using this link to see if we can recover it? Although not guaranteed, the file may be still recoverable. Thank you.

As explained in the original thread it's possible the system may put the external drive to sleep or some other connection issue occur. For performance reasons Affinity doesn't load the whole file into the memory and needs constant access to it. Working directly from an internal drive should prevent these things from happening.

Hi there. Just uploaded.

Sorry if I sound rude but this is unacceptable in my opinion. I really hope you can work this out. It is becoming impossible to trust the app.

No worries @riga, I understand your frustration. Unfortunately due to the way the application works this may happen in some circumstances if the connection to the drive is lost. We are trying to improve app's reliability here, meanwhile we advise do not work directly from USB sticks/drives, NAS or synchronised cloud folders as they may interfere with the apps ability to access the file.

The files are now with the dev team but it's already 10:30 PM in the UK so they only will be able to check them tomorrow morning. Thanks for your understanding.

Until such time as this can be made to work reliably the apps should refuse to open files from those sources, or at the very least warn users of the risks before allowing them to do so.

As it is now, the only way users learn about this issue is from the forums ... often after they have lost hours of work, just like the OP here.

exactly. would be very helpful to do so in a simple email or pop up message. I guess we all love the app but this is a very serious problem that lead to a trust issue.

It should be built into the apps.

I've already reported this after the file corruption issue hit me last Friday and also on two previous occasions, using an old Mac pro with 4 internal drives

Thanks MEB for the above - just checked energy saver in system preferences and switched off 'put drives to sleep when possible' hopefully this may work for users with multiple internal drives?

Unfortunately, it must be stated that Serif does not react to similar proposals at all.

It can only be concluded, that he does not care about the data and work of users at all.
