Hi pjglad,

No, it's not a permanent solution, it just helps to clean up some conflicting config/setting that may be causing issues.

If it's happening again then it's probably a bug, however i'm having difficulty reproducing it here.

Can you attach a sample file that's giving you trouble please?

Sequence:

 

1) Launch Affinity Photo

2) File/Open any RAW image

3) Select Overlay Gradient Tool then click drag and release

 

At this juncture the Gradient is replaced by the Crop Grid and the Crop Tool is highlighted. I then click on the Overlay Gradient Tool and the Gradient reappears. This behavior is consistent on my iMac and Macbook Pro both running El Capitan 10.11.1
