Mac mini M1 Permissions: CAN launch Photo; CAN'T launch DEISGNER; Read & Write allowed on both

Recommended Posts

I have a new Mac mini M1, running macOS 11.3. A few days ago I downloaded and installed Affinity Designer & Photo, which I had previously used on my MacBook Pro.

At first, Photo 1.9.3 failed to launch, displaying an alert that says I do not have permissions. I got info, and changed admin from Read to Read & Write. Afterward, I restarted. Then the app opened normally.

With Designer, the same set of steps did not yield any change. Now, I want to completely uninstall & reinstall, but I can’t find an uninstaller, nor any instructions. Old MacBook Pro is under repair.

Useful suggestions, anyone?

There is no uninstaller, and there shouldn't really be any need to uninstall.

(But...

If you downloaded them from the Apple App Store, then the standard procedure is to start Launchpad, hold down on the application icon until all app icons start to shake, then click the cross in the top left-hand corner of the icon for Affinity Designer.

If you downloaded it from the Affinity Store, then you'll need to open your Applications folder, drag the application to the Bin (Trash) and then empty.)

I wouldn't expect changing permissions on the application file itself to make a lot of difference. It's possible that you didn't give it access to your folders when you first launched it. If so, go to System Preferences - Security and Privacy - Privacy. Click on Full Disk Access, unlock using your system password and add Affinity Designer. Do the same for Files and Folders.

If that doesn't work, it would be interesting to know where Affinity Designer is installed.

Affinity Photo 2.0.3,  Affinity Designer 2.0.3, Affinity Publisher 2.0.3, Mac OSX 13, 2018 MacBook Pro 15" Intel.

I totally agree with this point.

But, on my own mini M1, none of the three Affinity apps are listed in my Full Disk Access screen.  Only Publisher is listed under Files and Folders (for Desktop access).  All are generally working as expected.

Conversely, on my nine-month old Catalina MacBook Pro, Photo and Publisher are both listed under Full Disk Access - though neither is ticked.  And none is listed under Files and Folders.

@Zalel - were you opening the apps directly?  (For example, by clicking it in the Dock.)  Or were you double-clicking an existing Affinity document to open the doc straight into the app?  If the latter, were the documents you were trying to open located in your home directory (ie on your local boot drive)?  Or were they on a USB memory stick, some where on a local network or in the cloud?

If you try the uninstall/reinstall and get the same permissions alert, can you please grab a screenshot of it and then post it back here, so we can see the exact details?
(In case you're unfamiliar with taking 'proper' screenshots, this article explains the basics: Take a screenshot on your Mac.)
