Rather than have grids cover a full page, can I have them only in frames?

If you are referring to Publisher, then individual text frames can have, or not have their own base line grid, and the individual grids can have their own spacing line spacing.

What sort of “frames” would you like to have a grid in, and why would you want a grid in them?

How about this: I created a table with 1" squares, placed it on a master page & enabled snapping. When its time to print, I can apply a master without the table.
Or, is there a setting to prevent the table from printing?

If you're referring to Baseline Grids, one option might be to set the colour of the document Baseline Grid to fully transparent and the colour of individual text frame grids to something more visible:

With Snap to Baseline Grid enabled, this gives you control over object placement on the page without actually being able to see the grid. You could do something similar with the standard page grid - just set the colour to transparent.

(Incidentally does anyone know of a way of setting a default Baseline Grid for text frames? Mine seems to be set to 14pt and although I've tried fiddling with Defaults I can't seem to modify it.)

You still haven’t explained what you mean by “frames”.

less clutter on the page

What do you mean by “less clutter”?
The built-in grid can be switched on/off as necessary so you only need to see it when you want to.

I get a feeling that you are trying to fight against the existing functionality when you don’t actually need to.

It might help if you tell us which Affinity applications you have (and are using) and what you are trying to do.

Greyfox and h_d: From the replies so far I don’t think pcdlibrary is working with text, but I can’t be certain.
