Learn the difference between a gradient tool and a gradient map. They are very different. One can be used to match colors between two photos which is perfect for photo manipulation, while the other is used more for stylizing your project. This is an Affinity Photo beginners tutorial and number 21 of the Digitally Fearless Power tools of Affinity Photo playlist.

Nice idea with the 3-swatches-from-image palette!

A few observations how to speed up the workflow even more:

  • For gradient fills on a Fill layer, forget the context toolbar's awkwardly small "multilevel-popup" window and the color picker loupe.
Add/select the stops directly on the gradient graph on the canvas and apply swatches to them directly from the Swatches panel. Or from the Color panel.

  • For the Gradient Map, simply switch the color popup from HSL Wheel to Swatches. Again, no need for the color picker.
  • The opacity/blend mode section in the Gradient Map floating window syncs with the Layers panel display. It's the same function. You can adjust everything from there without having to go back and forth or reopenting the adjustment window.
