Serif / Affinity Designer

Recommended Posts

Still in the year 2021 Affinity Designer does not have a Smart Fill Tool. Year 2021 is still analogous, that is, you have to do everything manual, I am disappointed.

Hi Andrés, I'm not sure what you were expecting Serif to do in the two weeks since you first mentioned this request?

Serif typically don't respond to these forums, and (for better or worse) they provide no public road map for their products.

Like all feature requests made here, we post and then we wait… {and wait, and wait}. It may not be a great system, but it's the only one we've got. It's a bit like screaming into a vast, gaping hole and telling it that you desperately need a pony—and then forever wondering why you still don't have a pony.

As for disappointment, it's always a popular flavour around here. In the meantime you're better off either finding a tool that better suits your needs and requirements, or embracing the challenge of devising endless workarounds to make up for the long-standing feature gaps (and bugs) in the Affinity Suite.

I used to be disappointed, but now I'm ambivalent. :)

The Affinity suite may be far from perfect, but it is generally improving on a regular basis (let's not mention the 1.9.x release, shall we), and for many folks (myself included) it's actually become their preferred toolset. YMMV.

Some great applications for the fluid work and that as I understand they were created to compete with Adobe, they have been small compared to the standard of the design industry. If you do not add the tools that designers need in the coming months, Affinity will be in the past and we will switch to other alternatives even if they are higher in price. Inkscape is free and has the Smart Fill Tool and other key tools for the Graphic designer.

It's not a zero-sum game. There can be more than one company/suite/tool.

Affinity is not going to replace Adobe as the industry standard, it's just such a HUGE mountain to climb. They can however provide tools that better speak to certain audiences/needs, much the same way Procreate and ClipStudio helped to redefine digital painting (and both are used extensively by professional artists) despite Adobe Photoshop arguably remaining the industry standard.

I think you raise a really good point in that if Serif fails to deliver meaningful updates in the coming months, many customers may look for alternatives (some may return after a while, or hedge their bets using multiple options; including Affinity apps). Open source alternatives have definitely gotten much better in recent years, with applications such as Blender now making in-roads into many studios at the expense of Maya, etc. but the Affinity suite provides users with a cohesive experience and toolset across applications/contexts that is often lacking in individual open source tools.

If Inkscape has the smart fill tool that you need, perhaps you don't need Affinity Designer? You could also donate any money you would have paid to Serif to Inkscape to further fund their development.
