Unable to load pdf file to KDP

Recommended Posts

I have been having trouble loading a 203 page book interior to Kindle Direct Publishing that I have made in Affinity Publisher. It contains quite a lot of graphics from different sources and some text.  There are some pages with bleed and I have allowed for this in the dimensions of the pages. I exported it to pdf as a pdf/X-1a:2003 according to their suggestion.

I have asked on the KDP forum and was told that it needed to be flattened, but I don't know how to do this in Publisher/Designer. I read somewhere on here that the pdf/X-1a format automatically flattens the document. Is that correct?

Some of the graphics were vector formatted but I have changed these to jpegs just in case that was the problem, but it doesn't seem to have helped. If anything, its worse because now the error message is just 'Failed manuscript upload' whereas before it uploaded it but failed when I tried to Preview it.

What other things could be preventing it from uploading successfully? I am new to this and don't know where to start in resolving the problem. I have successfully uploaded three other books with no problem but they were much simpler in content.

The cover has uploaded with no issues.

Thanks for any help.

Hi @PinkCampion,

My apologies for the delayed response here!

Unfortunately I'm not personally familiar with Amazons KDP upload process, however from a few cursory Google searches it appears this issue has been reported before when the uploader has a 'spotty' internet connection.

Have you tried uploading your file since, or whilst using a different connection that has been successful, or are you still receiving this error?

Thanks in advance :)

I have the same problem,

Just an idea: Is the successfully uploaded cover in its PDF as 1 page only, means as a spread merged of possibly a two facing page layout in Affinity?

I assume at least the content pages of the book are required to be in the PDF as single pages (not merged to 2-page spreads). In case of spreads in the PDF the KPD software might be confused by the correct page dimensions + the total number of pages.
