Ability to export icon files (*.ico) in Designer

Recommended Posts

+1

Every time I need an icon for a windows application / installer I create it in designer then spend ages trying to remember how I made the icon for the last one (as I only need this every ~6 months). I'd be happy with a simple bitmap ico file export so I don't have to go looking for the dodgy online creators or gimp. Bonus points for adding scaled icons / supporting per-resolution tweaks and for supporting the mac icon bundle. If you consider this noise in the UI (i.e. not wanting to list all formats known to technology), perhaps it could be made configurable. Just please add it somewhere.

I've bought the suite twice, because I like the concept, but can't use it as much as I want due to little things like this... and the lack of a DAM requiring me to export / maintain a bunch of assets when using designer / photo bits in publisher.

See this topic is still rather active, posted about the same thing myself.

Would definitely love to see an *.ico export feature integrated. Not sure why people assume that because the software is vector it can't be used for icons, nor why just because they are currently stored as a .dll file, doesn't mean people aren't making icons for their own use, or wanting to do things their own way.

Affinity isn't strictly commercial use only, so if there's still support for a feature despite the "industry standard" not using/requiring it, although later replies seem to suggest it may still be useful regardless, it doesn't make it not worth introducing, for end users who don't use *.ico files, it's neither here nor there, but for those who do want the feature it'd make a world of difference, especially when it comes to the previously mentioned TOS of online converters that may sneak in "reserve the right to use uploaded content for our own promotional use...etc etc etc"

Do hope that this is considered by the devs, unless plugins are ever introduced (only post I could find regarding plugins was from 2016 and said they didn't have plans at that stage to introduce plugin support) which would allow open source version of it.

Isn't there a workaround saving it as another format and renaming the extension to .ico?

I remember something like this from the last time I needed this ..

A true ICO file is usually a collection of versions of an icon at different sizes but some software that ‘requires’ *.ico files will happily accept renamed PNG files.

and no response from affinity team seriously !?

Yes, seriously - Serif does not respond to function requests in principle.

You say that like it's a good thing, something that is acceptable, something that should not surprise us.  This is an Affinity forum run by Serif is it not?

You say that they do not respond "in principle".  What does that mean?  Are you suggesting that Serif/Affinity have a company policy stating that they do not or will not reply to comments, questions or request from paying customers?  If true, that is a horrible and stupid decision for any company to make, especially a company in the computer software business - an industry where product life cycles are short, new competition is only one geek-with-a-garage away, and customer loyalty is virtually non-existent.

Yeah at least some basic acknowledgement and an indication as to whether a feature is on the roadmap, stuck in the backlog, or not being developed.

It would be good if you would try to read my post related to the "Feature Requests & Suggestions" forum. Serif obviously responds to questions and comments from users, not only those who pay, but also those who try the product or are just considering its use. Just look in the "Affinity Support & Questions" forum.

Have you some suggestions without ico web generators?

As I stated in the post at the beginning of the thread, I use IcoFX version 1.6.4 (the latest Freeware), which is quite sufficient for my purposes.
I will export as individual png images (in addition to just changing the size / resolution, which I solve using the export slice settings, it is sometimes necessary to modify the displayed details and shapes, so it is a completely different image), which I then place in IcoFX in the appropriate *.ico file/container.

And the fact, that Serif does not respond to requests for functions, has been mentioned here (in response to your post) before.

I don't know but this is pretty much the reason I would no longer recommend any affinity software to anyone.
Yeah Photoshop sucks for having become a service as a product thing but at least they still develop and evolve.
This thread has been open for 6 years, constantly active and totally reasonable as a feature request
and its the second feature that I've basically been waiting on for years to at some point be integrated.

It feels like they made Photo and Designer six years ago and ever since just fixed a few bugs
while competitors kept improving their products

These days there is a lot of free or cheap one time payment editing software and I feel like
Affinity has had its peak days long ago

Several bugs still exist in Photoshop, versions after versions. The best service in Adobe company is the marketing... Long life to Affinity!

Actually there have been numerous improvements and additions, as well as many bug fixes, over the years since the apps were first released.
