Repeatable Endless Progress Bar with Fill Bucket

Recommended Posts

I have a document (attached) which is a simple (but random) collection of small rectangles with total of 4 grays. Using the fill bucket (6%, not contiguous) it will never complete (or at least nothing for several minutes before force quitting). I have filled far more complex and larger images with widely spread out areas of same color without issue. This image does not work. Your fill algorithm is clearly suffering from degenerate edge cases. I tried several cases (1) starting from 75x75 image I resized to 6000x6000 with nearest neighbor (2) saved that image first and restarted the app. Both cases repeatedly result in the same behavior. I also used the original 75x75 image which supports fills without issue. The report based on the first instance of killing the app was sent to Apple so you should be able to see it.

Also selection (Magic Wand) has the same issue - endless beachball.

If I start from the source image, a 4500x4500 noise image of rectangles from which the 75x75 image was taken, fill works correctly and instantly. Perhaps something in creating the attached document is broken.

Something about the file wip4 is wrong. I have the same problem as you describe when using it. However I did a Save As... and then a Document > Flatten and all worked well with it. The Save As... is not necessary but the Document > Flatten is.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

I wonder if copying a small portion of a larger image into a new document, then expanding it to be much bigger, made the resulting document broken somehow.

Can you repeat the steps taken to make that document the way it is?

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

Oddly, for me the first time I opened the file & used the Flood Fill Tool set as in the OP, there was no progress bar & no hang but none of the image would fill when I clicked on it, although the History panel showed that the Flood Fill had been applied. I then tried the Erase Tool just to make sure some tool worked & it did, although there was a noticeable lag.

After doing that switching back to the Flood Fill Tool worked normally, although also with a noticeable lag.

Weirder still, after quitting & relaunching AP, the Flood Fill Tool worked normally on the first try. But it still lagged much more than I would expect for a simple 6000 x 6000 px image.

I did in fact do it twice from the original. I didn't attach the original file as it is 9MB png.
