Affinity Designer Keeps Crashing

Recommended Posts

Dear Affinity Team,

As the title reads: Affinity Designer keeps crashing randomly with only Discord running in the background and nothing else. I create a document, insert a sketch and then begin to outline using shapes and the Pen tool; as I progress throughout building the sketch into vector outlines the application crashes without warning. The file has two images of the sketches and few vector outlines plus any guidelines I've placed. The Artboard size is 2560 x 720 and I've reset all settings by opening the app using CNTRL click and selecting all and resetting.

This has been happening many times making the app almost not usable; luckily I have a habit of hitting CNTRL + S which has saved me many times.
I need assistance in fixing this matter.

Sincerely,
EC71PZ

Hello,

Have you intalled the latest version (1.9.2.1035)? If not, do it. If yes, deactivate Hardware Acceleration under Edit -> Settings -> Performance.

If the chrashes not gone copy %appdata%\affinity\photo\1.0\crashreports\reports  and paste it in to the explorer pathline. Attach the last dump-file if there is one, here, next time you post here.

Dear Komatos,

I believe I have the latest version downloaded (not sure how to check, but I did uninstall and reinstall). Also, I turned off Hardware Acceleration and the application still keeps crashing.
I found the "appdata/affinity/designer...etc". but I do not know what/where the "Explorer Pathline" is.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,
EC71PZ

Hi EC71PZ,

Thanks for the crash reports, from what I can see it is crashing in an area related to DirectX, however it does look like your graphics card drivers are pretty much up to date.

Does this crash happen when you're only working on a specific document, or has it happened on other documents? Would it be possible for you to attach the document you're using that is causing the crashes? If you could also get a screen capture that shows the crash that would be helpful. I know you say it is random, but if it does happen quite often and shortly into a session  would it be possible to record that session and hopefully get the crash on video?

So I have installed the upgrade to 1.9.2 for all Affinity programs....only now are they constantly "stop responding"...is it because of a wacom tablet or something else?

AD - keeps "not responding" after a couple of brushstrokes or even after modifying stroke pressure or other tabs.

AP - keeps "not responding" and shuts down after loading.

Any suggestions?

Dear Sean P,

1. So far, yes: The crash only happens while working on a specific document, but it's the only document I've been working on since the crashes have begun, so I do not know if it is document related (I tend to work on a single project at a time anyway, though.)
2. Yes, I absolutely can attach the document I've been working on.
3. There is nothing to screen-capture; when the app crashes, it just disappears and shows my desktop (typically no "Not Responding" messages or anything). It also makes my monitor flash completely black (and it never happens outside of using the app, so I'm assuming it's not related to GPU or cables/connections.) at times.
4. Yes, I can begin another project (Would you prefer it within the same document, or a new document?) while recording my screen until the application crashes (if it does again).

Sincerely,
EC71PZ

P.S.
Question: These files I'm sending aren't compromising my system in anyway are they? Hah. I have no clue what these are, but I do want to help you guys out.

@Etostudio  try it with the beta! Another way to try, is to deactivate the hardware acceleration under edit -> preferences -> performance.

@EC71PZ Click with the right mouse button on the Windows Start button.
Open the command prompt (as administrator) and enter sfc /scannow.

@ByBén Welcome to the Forum,

Based on the memory dump, I would recommend that you update the iGPU drivers and install the latest retail version (1.9.2.1035) or/and the latest beta (1.9.4.1048) of Designer.

Dear Komatos,

I ran the scan and Windows found files and repaired them; not sure if the corrupted files were related to the problem in Affinity Designer though, either way, it helped with something.

Thank you

Dear Sean P,

Update: I started two sessions recording while using the application, both were an hour long (2 hours in total) without a single crash. I’ll continue a 3rd session sometime later.

Note: I did briefly open the “MONKE” document and my monitor flashed black (like it’s done before crashing); it did resume the application and project though, but I figured it’s worth noting (it may be just this document).

Also, at one point the “MONKE” document was being saved to iCloud while being worked upon and transferred to my desktop later on.

Sincerely,

EC71PZ

@EC71PZ I've downloadet the Monke project file, but I couldn't find any errors and I couldn't provoke any errors by making changes.

From the dumpfile I can see that your version of Windows is not up to date, which is already a possible source of error.

@ByBén Try to deactivate the hardware acceleration in designer to see if this helps.

Have you installed 3rd-party apps like antivirus software?

Is your Windows up-to-date?

And a sugestion, run sfc /scannow.

Click with the right mouse button on the Windows Start button.
Open the command prompt [cmd] (as administrator) and enter sfc /scannow.

@Etostudio As I can see from the screenshot, you are still using an outdated version of Windows 10 (1903). I recommend that you update to the current version.

Out of nowhere Designer started to have constant crashes, causing the computer to restart.  Until about 5 days ago everything was normal and I was working with heavy and complex documents.
After the last windows update (Windows 10 pro - OS Build 19041.928), Designer crashes randomly, sometimes placing a dot on the canvas or moving a layer on the stack, or doing other basic things. There is no specific trigger, none that i can point out for sure because it is random.
The only difference is that I’m currently working with isometric grid, doing isometric things.
Just now, I had 4 crashes in a row (that restarted the computer) but I only have 2 reports in the folder. I don't know if they are grouped by date in the same file, or if the crash is so violent that there is no time to save a report.  The reports are attached

The only software that is causing pc crash is Designer (I haven't tested the photo or publisher yet) even when it is running alone after a fresh restart (or after returning from the previous crash), without other software or non-microsoft services in background.

In comparison, doing a giant painting on Krita for hours, rendering huge scenes in Blender or using Godot for hours does not trigger any crash. If I close everything and try to use designer it will crash now. Even if I restart the computer as I said before.

I haven't installed any software or drivers in the past few weeks, just the windows update about 5 or 6 days ago

Hello @Dreatern

I can't open the .dmp file from today, 22.04.2021 because it has no valid information.
And the analysis of the dump from 16.04. shows libpersona.dll as the culprit.

@Sean P  will be able to help here

In the meantime try to run the beta of designer
