Affinity Photo: Magic Wand - Adding not working

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I want to "add to selection" with the magic wand tool. But when I follow the tool instructions on the bottom of the screen and "right-click to add", nothing happens. My selection just stays as it is.

What am I missing?

Thankyouu

Shift-click adds to my selection, as does ctrl-click. Alt-click removes from the selection. Maybe a translation issue with the tool instructions?

I'm macOS, you appear to be Windows. So it may not be the same :37_disappointed:

Only Control click adds here on Mac OS 10.14.6, option click subtracts. This is true for the Marquee select as well as the magic wand.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.0 | Affinity Photo 2.4.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Ah yes apologies.

When I shift-clicked I was in Append mode (which the OP doesn't want). In "New" mode, as  @Old Bruce rightly says, only ctrl-click adds to the selection on macOS. I would expect a secondary click (two-finger click on the trackpad, presumably the equivalent of right-click on Windows), to do the same. But it doesn't. Might need a bug report from a Windows user.

Yes, right click don't work.

Unfortunately, just proof that Serif does not even use elementary testing of its products in its development 😞

The trivial cause for problem is an erroneous tool tip.

You're right, it's a Left Click + Right Click combination.
It should therefore be described as follows (although the + sign could be bold to be clearly visible),

and not like this.

Just saying that Windows has one modifier key less than macOS and then mechanically applying left+right mouse button is an excuse for laziness.

As a Mac-only user I'm just curious, but what would be a better alternative, one that does not interfere with the existing modifier key options?

In most situations there are vacant modifiers, e.g., in this particular situation Shift would be useful for adding to selection, and Alt could be left as subtractor.

My guess is they thought that since elsewhere in the UI Shift is used to constrain things like marquee selections, it would be confusing if it was used as the add modifier for the Flood Fill Tool. But it already has a different function in the Freehand selection Tool so maybe not.

For example Ctrl.

On Windows, Ctrl is often used for adding - for example, in Affinity when adding to a layer selection in the Layers panel (same as multiple file selection in File Explorer), adding to text block selection (same as Word), adding column/cell/block to multiple columns/cells/blocks selection in Excel, adding to multiple icon selection on desktop (Win),...
