Affinity Designer: How do you copy and paste an object in a layer?

Recommended Posts

This is my artwork:

It is all within a single layer:

I want to duplicate one of the circle shapes. So I use the white arrow tool to select the circles of the desired object:

And then use the tool to select the specific object (so the little circles turn blue):

Now with the circle shape selected, I press CMD+C to copy it. And CMD+V to paste it. Except in the layers, it shows the entire layer has been duplicated and not just the circle shape I selected:

How can I copy and paste the selected circle shape without duplicating the entire layer?

Unfortunately you can't. (Coming from Illustrator, I feel your pain here.)

The workarounds are:

  1. Layer > Geometry > Separate Curves
  2. duplicate the part and move it to another layer
  3. Layer > Geometry > Merge Curves

or:

  1. duplicate the whole Curves object
  2. select it with Node tool
  3. Select > Select All
  4. unselect the nodes of the part you want to keep, see the Info bar at the bottom of the window for possible modifiers you can use
  5. delete

Thanks for your help! I can't believe it's not possible, as the work arounds are a lot of work for making quick duplications! Hopefully it will be added in the future!
